Lately the calls for help regarding playback of .mkv-files are catching in quite often, so I decided to make a short tutorial/FAQ. There are probably many other ways to get it going, I simply post the one I have used. If you have any additions/problems with this setup, please reply to the topic so I can edit this first post to always have the best solution on the first post. Here we go:

    Requirements

    Installation
    • Install FFDSHOW Tryout
    • Install Haali Media Splitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/)
    • Install CoreAVC Codec
    • Register VSFilter_20070918 (search via google; register with "regsvr32 VSFilter_20070918.dll")

    Configuration
    • Go to Haali Media Splitter Settings, Options, Compatibility, set Autoload VSFilter to "YES")
    • Go to MP-Configuration, Movies, Movie Player, set CoreAVC for H.264
    • (If using Powerdvd 7 Codec and having problems, turn off DXVA in MP-Configuration-> DirectShow Filter Control -> PowerDVD)

    Result

.mkv's will work in MP :D

    Credits

Credits go to tontsa, ronilse and ParanoidDelusion!

he means If using Powerdvd 7 codec!

this guide only works if you set ffdshowRAW to postprocessor in mp config.

on my system is it not possible to play MKV Files with PowerDVD Codec (in Mediaportal). Only CoreAVC or FFDSHOW works. i think its generell not possible.

Disabling the hw acc made it possible for me to use the powerdvd codec for mkv movies once.
Cant tell the exact versions as i am using coreavc since months.

i have test it. i use PowerDVD Codec for 264 in myMovies, select FFDSHOW RAW as Postprocessor and i disable hw acc unter DX.
if i play a MKV Movie, i become a black screen. CoreAVC works, but no chance with PowerDVD.

i use PowerDVD 7 Ultra with the latest Patch from Cyberlink.
