Hi all !

after a few years using MP, and be very satisfied with the 2.3 version, i finally decided to move on 1.0 version with tv server + 2 tv clients.

on the media server, everything is OK (MP+TVserver+TVclient)

on the client host, the TV clent does not work !!

symptoms :
- when launching MP, it is VERY slow and hangs about 2 min. on 'loading window plugin' message.
- once launched, music, video... seems ok. But when i enter the tv module... it hangs for 5 minutes at least
then it asks me to 'specify the IP address or host name of the master TV service'
> i reenter the (already visible) IP address of the server.
> i wait again at least 5 minutes and it finally tells me :
"connected to tvserver
unable to connect to database
all ip ports seems to be fine"
?? !!!

can you help me ?

regards,

singer

note : both firewalls disactivated, SQL server browse set to 1433,

note : i could connect to the server sql database with a TOAD installed on the client host. So the problem is not there .

    Hi,

What sort of router are you using?

I seem to have problems every time I do a clean install of MP. The clients won't connect until I reboot my netgear router. There really is no obvious reason why this should be the case (the router's firewall should not affect internal traffic, and the ports are open anyway) but it has happened a few times now.

    Hope this helps.

Hi ! in france, the main internet providers provide what we call a 'box' (see Freebox, la meilleure offre ADSL: Internet, Téléphone, Télévision).

this box provides a 'triple' offer : TV, phone, and internet (20Mbps)...
this bos is also a router... (mini linux system).

I also think there might be something with it, but i tested the different ports from my client server :
    telnet <server IP> 554
    telnet <server IP> 31654 (? not shure : don't remember)
    telnet <server IP> 1433

and they were alll OK !

Still i will try to restart my box.

    thanks

Hanging at that point would indicate that the client can't connect to the databse to access tv channel data amongst other things.

Check you have set up the SQL database on your server to allow correct access for network clients as in the wiki.

Double check your firewall setings and router settings.

the client should be able to connect the database because :
    - at first i had problem and the message saying "some ports not open : 554, 1433, 31456..." and after reconfiguring firewall and SQL server, the message disappeared
    - i check with telnet commands : everything is OK (needed to use IP adress)
    - i can connect to the database with TOAD from the client machine

i have no EPG data loaded... just channels listed in. May that be a problem ?

    i found something interesting :
in error.log it gives me the sql connection string :
    "Check the connection string: Password=mediaportal;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=sa;Initial Catalog=MpTvDb;Data Source=htpc\SQLEXPRESS;Connection Timeout=300;"

my server name is htpc.... but this command fails : "telnet htpc 1433"
    and this command succeeds : "telnet <ip adress> 1433"

so i have to modify the connection string, but where is that ? on client host ? server host ?

    YYYYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    i am a f***** genius !!
ok let's say i am just not too stupid.

the problem was : i have 2 computers, but is a professionnal one (laptop = client) and belongs to a domain.
The other (server) belongs to a simple workgroup.

when i do some actions (like telnet) pointing to the server hostname, it does not work.
when i do the same actions pointing to the server IP adress, it works.

Dealing with the sql database, i don't know why but the client does only know the hostname, instead of the IP adress. Therefore i have to tell my client computer that the 'htpc' hostname is equivalent to the specific IP adress....

That can easily be done through the 'hosts' file !!!!

since you have a single seat install, try to update your 'hosts' (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc) file.

    just put something like :
    127.0.0.1 localhost <your host name>

Singer36, thanks so much. you are a f***ing genius! I spent 8 hours trying to get a single seat install to work in a clean install of MP 1.0.2. I read somewhere else that Nod32 might be a problem but I didn't want to uninstall it and your quick fix did the trick! Putting localhost in MP\TV\TV Client as the hostname should really have the same effect I would have thought, but it didn't!
