Dear Forum Members,

:sorry: In the tread above I pressed "Enter" accidently before I entered any text.


I have installed TV-Server 1.0 RC3 on a Windows XP Prof. SP3 machine.
And I installed MP 1.0 RC3 on a second system, which should work as TV Client later in my livingroom.

I managed to configure the MS-SQL Server and TV channels and so on.
I can watch live TV and I can watch recordings on the TV client.
So I'm very happy about it.

But I see a problem. After the server was running for several hours and when I start the server configuration programm, it gives an error: "TV-Service not running. Start it now?". I click yes and then it says: "TV-Service could not be started."

But the service is running. I can see it in the Windows Management Console. I can stop it and restart it. But it does not help.

The only way to get it to work again it to restart Windows.
Then after several hours the same issue.

What could be the reason for this behavior?

Hi grobi73. There is a problem with your SQL server connection. Run setuptv.exe --configure-db from the TV server. Type in your password and click Test. Click Ok and Save.

Try changing your computer name (remove the dash in pc-tvsvr) and reinstall everything again. Don't forget to delete the MSSQL folder in Program Files.

thanks for your quick response.

This morning I have tested the SQL connection (setuptv.exe --configure-db).
The connection was successful. But at the moment the server is running without any problem.
Preliminary I leave all settings as they are.
I think I can see the problem this evening when I come home again. Then I will test SQL connection again and let you know.

I'm not sure but this also happens in Vista too. I changed the startup type to "Automatic (Delayed)" so it doesn't start right away when I bootup. I have to click on Tv-server Configuration to manually start Tv service. Its working so far with no problems.

I just went back to my TV Server. It has been running continuously since yesterday's restart. This are round about 18 hours. I did not use hibernate or standby!

The error is there again. When I want to start the configuration application it says: TVservice is not running.
Then I tested the SQL connection again (setuptv.exe --configure-db) -> still successful !
From my TV-Client PC I still can access the TV-Server.

Do you still think this is a general setup problem regarding the name of the server (pc-tvsvr) ???

I want to attach my logs again, because I saw an entry in the error.log regarding sockets .

BTW: when this problem occurs, then it is not possible to open web sites with internet explorer. I hit on this because I do not use internet with the TVserver usualy. After a restart of Windows both is working again: TV-Service and internet.
Maybe this problem affects TCP/IP of Windows ?

Are you using a wireless connection? It could be a bad network connection.

SQL server can be picky about the hostname and password you use. I saw on this forum that someone had fixed the problem by removing a dash in their hostname.

grobi73, Did you ever resolve this isue? I'm experiencing similar symptoms.

TvService is running in the task manager but when I start TV-Server configuration I get the question "The TvService is not runing. Start it now?". If I then kill the service running and select "yes", everithing will be fine for a day or something. If I select "No" there are no tuners found by the configuration tool.

I suspect that there is some crap in the database but I would need som guidlines how to clean up in there, could someone give point me in the right direction? Ben serching the forum but could not find the info among all the data.

Hi Tomas,

sorry for late replay.

Meantime I had a hard disk crash on my TV server. My new 750GB WesternDigital disk has totaly failed suddenly, so all data is lost for ever.
Of course I have always taken images from the installation, but I only stored them in the second partition on the same disk.

So I had to install all new from scratch.

The server is now running since a view days without problems.

I have used WinXP Pro SP3 again and MediaPortal 1.0 RC3.
Yust when I was ready with the configuration I have seen that RC4 is out. But I think I will skip it and I will wait for the final.

This are the differences I have made:
(old --> new)
Attansic LAN driver 2.3.7.10 --> 2.3.7.12
MS-SQL --> MySQL5
computer name PC-TVSVR --> tvsvr (to follow the tip from JoePlumber)

Up to now everything is running fine.

And to avoid data loss disaster in the future, I have the image now on a USB disk !

I was having a similar problem for a while. When my machine was started up or rebooted, the TV Service said it was started but you couldn't connect to it. Stopping and restarting the service fixed it.

My problem was that the TV Service was starting quicker than the database server. In the event log you could see the SQL Server rejecting any attempts to connect to it until all databases had started and by the looks of the TV Server can't cope with this.

My solution was to make the TV Service dependent on SQL Server service. Go into Regedit and locate the following key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TV Service. If there is a multi-string entry DEPENDONSERVICE, add MSQL$SQLSERVER to it. If the entry isn't there, add it. If your instance is not default, specify the instance of your SQL Server. Restart your computer.
