It is a bit of a long story!
I successfully installed MP2 on my old PC as client/server with client on my laptop to confirm my choice of this programme before buying a new PC. Everything worked very well.
I installed MP2 on the new PC as client/server and all was fine, but the laptop client would not connect to the server. I tried my usual "trick" of trying to uninstall MP2 to see if reinstalling it would solve the problem.
Uninstallation failed and the PC said there was an error and needed to restart. This happened every time I tried to repeat the uninstallation.
My next thought was to delete all the files and folders of MP2 using Explorer, but this also failed as it reported that some of the files were in use. In desperation, I tried rebooting the PC into Safe Mode and this time managed to delete all the programme files in MP2. I also uninstalled MariaDB using Windows uninstall as I thought it had been put on my system by MP during the first installation and would be replaced if necessary in a clean new installation.
This reinstallation of MP2 was not wholly successful. There was no icon on my desktop to launch the TV server configuration. I checked that the folder with all the TV server files was installed using Explorer and tried to run MP2-server.exe. This also failed with error message about installutil.exe not being present which is way outside my level of understanding.
Next step was to uninstall MP2 again (successfully) and then install MP1. This went well until the pop up window asked about database connections and the test button produced no successful

result with either option. (see image attached)
I downloaded and installed MariaDB from the web and tried again with the same result.
After completing the installation, I found a shortcut to launch server configuration, but this produced the familiar error message about the SQL database (see second image).
I am at my wits end because I do not understand enough about the error messages to be able to work out a solution. I have given details of the history of my actions in case some of the steps I have tried have caused the latest problem

I don't understand the internals of MP, so it is rare for me to be able to provide a solution. But what I do try to do whenever possible is to suggest a workaround. The workaround that will probably work is to install an older release of MP, specifically MP 1.33. Do this:

    (1) Run the uninstallers for MP1, MP2, MySQL, and MariaDB (depending on what is currently installed on your system).
    (2) Reboot.
    (3) With hidden folders visible (a Windows setting), delete any and all folders in:
    "C:\Program Files\"
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\"
    "C:\ProgramData\"
that have any of the following strings anywhere in the folder name:
    MediaPortal
    MySQL
    MariaDB
    (4) Reboot.
    (5) Run the installer for MP 1.33 with the internet accessible. This will be a simulated first-time install. You can choose either 32-bit or 64-bit MP. I use "Run as Administrator", although I don't know whether that is mandatory.
    (6) Reboot.
    (7) Run "TV Server Config" and check that you can scan for channels successfully.
    (8) Run "MP Config".
    (9) Start the MP client. It should work!
    (10) Run the MP 1.37 installer with the internet accessible. This will be an update install, and will update your system from MP 1.33 straight to MP 1.37 (but your system will still use MySQL -- see below).
    (11) Repeat steps (1) to (6) and (8) to (10) on your laptop to perform a client-only install. In step (5) make sure that you use the same installer that you used for the TV Server system. Hopefully you won't encounter the problems that you experienced previously.

The reason that MP 1.33 is likely to work is that this is that last release of MP1 that uses MySQL as the database engine. Starting with MP 1.34, MP uses MariaDB as the database engine, and this has some problems in some circumstances. I should add that a few weeks ago I performed a true first-time install of MP 1.37 on Windows 10 and (much to my surprise) the install was completely successful and MP ran without problem. My production system is currently running MP 1.37 updated from MP 1.33, on Windows 7.
