Same Problem here.

Very annoying that MP can't play a simple dvd reliably.

I'll give anydvd a trial.

maybe it is only an problem with the codecs installed arround the system, may the PDVD7/9 codecs, installed along with the Cyberlink Software are strictly dedicated to this software, so MP can't use it directly? don't know this for sure ...

i am using the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack without configuring something special in the install (just choose "playback only" in install and configure it as default) ... and assign ffdshow in every section of MediaPortal where an codec can be set. no additional dvd-software is installed. works fine!

ffdshow routes anything to the correct Codecs, which are included in the package (even the PDVD codec, wich is part of the packacge) it also works fine for mkv, xvid, divx and so on... haali splitter and other tools are included as well and are as default configured to operate without problems... and: ffdshow works even better than setting to MPA/MPV-filters in the config ;-)

Same thing here, I am using SAF since the beginning without any problem!
And I agree: avoid codec packs!!

one says so.... the other one says so...

i can't agree to the recommendation of avoiding any "codec packs" (but the most of them)

please, first have a look of what kind K-Lite is.. (which i specified in my recommendation)

an what SAF is... it is nearly the same thing (also SAF is an "codec package") ;-)

K-Lite Mega puts a fewer more codecs on the system in standard-installation, but only if you want so, if not, simply disable the unneccessary codecs in the setup (but the few more codecs do not disturbing anyway)

there are also different suites, the K-Lite basic package contains fewer codecs, i am using the mega package to have the benefit watching quicktime and realmedia without that crappy players...

the main thing is to have ffdshow and some tools like haali right configured on your system, and this will be done with the installation of K-Lite, along with an functionable MPEG-Codec (it installs PDVD-Codecs)

so i haven't any problems with that package, it works better than MPA/MPC, i need no additional DVD-Software or Single-Codecs, and i can also play all exotic (home/selfmade) videos, even the older ones ;-)

best regards

Using ffdshow instead of PDVD codecs for DVD playback has sorted it on my system. I can now play DVDs in MP again :)

EDIT: Quick update... realised that fixing the DVD playback had completely broken HD TV. Really stuttery picture lagging a few seconds behind sound. Uninstalled ffdshow and it's back to normal again (but can't play most DVDs in MP). Grrr.

With all the work being done on MP have none of the devs even looked at this problem. I have had issues playing DVDs ever since I started using MP and that was version 0.2.3.0. There is a lot of talk about making MP more stable and yet playing DVDs is not reliable for a lot of people.

I've been using MP for years on various systems, and various versions of MP. After being away for a few years I've just built a 6 core high spec pc solely for MP, and now for the 1st time ever I get this problem. Inserting a DVD just hangs my system in MP but plays fine every in all other software. MP is great, its just unfortunate that it relies on the complicated customisable foundation of a Windows based PC. Dont criticise MP, the devs do this stuff for fun not money.

It would be great though if there was a complete newbies guide to 'do these settings and MP WILL work!!!'.
