I like the concept but it was very flaky...

I've since jumped ship and am using Microsoft Media Center, its stable and I don't have to worry about missing recordings..

I'll keep checking in on MP but like you I lost the confidence in it.

Hardy har...

The point of your statement is not lost on me with regard to open source etc.
But let's be clear, losing a Saturday unexpectedly because I apply a windows 7 service pack is a worthy complaint.

I read a statement from the developer researching the problem. He knows how to get around it but is remiss to apply the solution. This puzzles me. Forcing a reboot prior to installation is a trivial thing compared to a completely failed and horked installation.

In the end the solution I applied the first time this occured to me did not work this time. I was forced to restore pre-service pack. If a solution is not soon found I (and I imagine many less vocal users) will have no choice but to dump MP in order to apply the windows service pack, starting from a fresh install is simply not on my agenda at this point as I've done that dozens of times to this point. Thus the comment of losing confidence.

As much as you may be thinking good ridance to complainers, losing users is never a good thing for a community supported entirely by the users. And I promise for every user like me willing to voice opinion and wait, there's at least a dozen more that did the take the time to let anyone know they experienced the problem. I know many of them personally.

No I didn't pay any money for the product. But it appears your reaction to comments means you've completely missed the point of my post.

To your point omayhemo

...starting from a fresh install is simply not on my agenda at this point as I've done that dozens of times to this point.

This should point to a problem already...

Forgo some features MP and just build a rock solid DVR.

That's my opinion.

    Let's keep some perspective here.

There is a problem with the installer. This will be fixed for 1.2.0.

If you take a little time to read the forums, you will find the solutions to your problem. Stop the TV service manually before updating to MediaPortal 1.1.3. Then the installer will work.

Unfortunately MediaPortal does need to check the version of Windows for compatibility. There are some versions of Windows that MediaPortal will simply not work on (without a lot of effort) and MediaPortal does need to check if you are using a tested compatible version of Windows.

It is always advisable to wait a few days before installing a major Windows service pack, in case problems like this are found. In short, even if it seems slightly selfish, let other people run into the problem first and learn from their experience rather than from your own.

A HTPC is not like a normal computer. If MediaPortal is working for you, and your computer is working, then why update? I know that we recommend keeping your computer up to date, but I would strongly suggest exercising some caution with this. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Having said all that, there is no reason why you cannot have a rock stable DVR based on MediaPortal. Touch wood, my TVServer has not given me any trouble (no missed recordings, no crashes, etc) for many months now. MediaPortal offers much more than Windows Media Center, and for no cost. Inevitably there are compromises. The developers are working on this in their spare time. Sometimes someone doesn't spot a potential problem. Many of the team members (including me) _might_ have anticipated the problem with the 1.1.3 installer. However, we did not. Does that make us incompetent? Not at all, just human.

Take it easy, and remember that this is just a computer program.

I didn't see such a statement, but there is more to this than forcing a reboot. The TVService runs as exactly that - a Windows service. There are many settings for services, including the ability to autostart the service when windows boots, to automatically restart a service if it is not running (crashes), etc. Any change to the installer would have to make sure it copes with all situations.

If I am going to be blunt, the reason this is happening is because the update was needed quickly (because people are installing SP1), and was released quickly. This is a response to circumstances. The last thing the team should do now is rush out another update to fix this one, and then find that it doesn't work properly and is no better (or even worse).

Honestly, none of this is 'trivial'. If you think it is, then maybe you know better than the team, and could download the sources and fix the problem. I don't say this to be patronising - it is a genuine comment, since this is generally how people find their way onto the team.

    Best wishes,
