By the way I just played an mkv, without any tearing.
Maybe some files will tear more than others or something.
    Yes, depending on frame rate.
Your GPU doesn't have hardware supported h.264/AVC video decoding acceleration, so decoding relies on your CPU. You will get frame drops and other problems if your CPU is working too hard.

That's not right. Hardware decoding is posssible on XP since ATI 2400 with VMR9+any proper suppported video decoder (MPC, Arcsoft, Cyberlink). LAV and CoreAVC are not among them.

Yep but since microsoft stop security update and lack of Dev, better to focus on new OS :)
Does any other Video decoder can do hardware decoding ? Because we can select them in MP config.

And for sure 1.4.0+ require more video memory so can act also to create issue, maybe with good video card on XP it's working good like we didn't remove all hack to make it work :p

@Edalex, i think we discuss this about try to make it work old default skin on latest MP version but you wanna try lol.

I remember doing an installer (deleted now) for that :) but my time is limited for now so i can't/want to setup it like first i have no more XP and will eat time :)

Still don't forget that i have past a lot a time to nail down at some point why MP doesn't work after 1.4.0 and manage to make it work for 1.4.1 or 1.5.0 (D3D stuff) but not only me work after i found the culprit commit (mm help too :) )

    Seb.

Surely if you want to avoid tearing with 23.976 content you must enable refresh rate changing.

If I enable the dynamic refresh rate option and play an mkv, the screen turns black and for a second I see my mousepointer and it doesn't do anything further.

Never had to enable it in the past.

Tried the dynamic refresh rate again, like before a black screen with mousepointer,
then it went back to the menu,
I started the same video file again,
    this time the video worked.

But I can't really say that it was an improvement.
With the DRR setting disabled the tearing is alot less,
    but still there.

I saw in the catalyst controll settings, that ATI overdrive was enabled,
maybe I should try turning it off and see if it's better or worse ( I guess worse )

You can try to disable DRR and set manually refresh rate :)
For ex, if you have 23.976 movie or serie and your monitor/TV or whatever can do 24Hz, then set display to 24Hz and try to play something :).

But OSD eat Video card menory if i'm not wrong so for ex on my laptop watching HD Channel looks ok but when i display OSD, it stutter like hell (even with hardware acceleration)

    I will try that,
but I have already tried lowering my refresh rate to 25hz and al it did was give me more tearing.
It seems that the lower I set it the more tearing I get.
It's now set on 1080p60 - 60hz in catalyst control center.
Also in Catalyst control center, when you go to monitor settings,
I can choose a higher refresh rate, but then the desktop goes bigger then my screen,
and I can't adjust it with the underscan - overscan slider.
I guess the maximum is 60hz, cause the slider does work then.

By the way, I couldn't disable the ati overdrive,
when I disable it, it will automatically re-enable when I click on apply.

If I can't get it to work, then I've got two options I guess, revert back to 1.3.0 or upgrade to windows 7

I have been VERY pleased with the LAV filters. The lowest video card I have is a HD4550 and it works just great! Be sure to configure each the audio, video & splitter for your system, especially the hardware video acceleration.
