Hey Tesla,

I had the same problem with the same drive. I had even the same problems with large files in every program. The problem is not MP but the drive itself. I contacted WD and even get a new one, because they don't now it either. It get a little better but it crashes (too) many times. I hope it solves in the future with a good firmare but till that time I'm afraid it keeps trouble.

Good luck,
Joe

Ps. I have a Win 7, 64bit machine. No difference.

Great info Joe, thanks. Yes, I know of one other person ... so that makes 3 of us. 2 on XP-32 and 1 on Win7-64

So, is there a way to measure "latency" or access time, that might be poor ... but at the same time, be able to perform good in the transfer throughput benches? The DVDs usually have 3-6 large 1gig files that hold the actual video. Could the access time be so poor that it can't "jump around" inside that file fast enough to keep MePo happy?

Is it MePo that's bailing out (or needs to be kept happy) or is it PowerDVD decoder? I guess the logs will tell us.

    I'm running MediaPortal v1.1.3.0 (MediaPortal_Setup_1.1.3.exe)

If I install this core file, will it work with this version?
If I recall correctly (it was pretty late for me! ;)) I built it for the version in your logs, which is 1.1.3. So that's a roundabout way of saying "yes". :)

Also, is there any chance it will mess-up anything? Like, do I need to run an Acronis Image of my C: drive first, while everything (except for the WD-3tb) is working?
No, no chance of messing up anything as long as you take the backup of the original file.

    Hi Tesla

Interesting problem. So I take it this only occurs with specific DVDs? Is the behaviour consistent - like will a given DVD either always play or never play [from the 3TB drive]?
Can you try the attached Core.dll so we can get some more detailed debug info:

    1. Close MP.
    2. Take a backup of the Core.dll in your MP install folder.
    3. Download and extract the attached DLL into your MP install folder.
    4. Start MP and attempt to reproduce the problem again.

    mm

    Please see attached.

What I played after installing the special core.dll

    1. Madagascar from a good drive (for reference). Works fine and even with Chapter Skip and FF (all speeds)
    2. Magagascar from the WD-3tb (tried to start it a couple of times ... it never started)
    3. Madagascar-2 from the WD-3tb (it starts, but tried to chapter skip and it returned to the main menu)
    3. Madagascar-2 from the WD-3tb (it starts, but tried to FF ... at 4x it returned to the main menu)

Looking at the file structures ...

Madagascar has 2 main 1-gig files, but the rest of the main video files are smaller and more of them.

    Madagascar-2 has 3 1-gig files, and a 750mb file.

Of course, both disks have other smaller files also, but the files that actually contain the video seem to be divided differently. This might explain why ALL disks play wrongly from this drive, but in 2 different failure ways.

This is the part that has me miffed. I'm aware that the hardware ecosystem is not entirely primed for internal 3TB HDD support right now (you need a 64-bit OS, UEFI instead of BIOS, and GPT partitioning), but my understanding is that the MyBook controller abstracts any of the trouble away so that the OS doesn't need to worry about that stuff. Maybe I'm wrong. Have you got a PC with W7 64 bit conveniently at hand that you could test this?

I just double checked playing these same moves (and others) from the WD-3tb drive, but directly from PowerDVD9. They have no problems starting and play fine and also have no trouble with Chapter Skip or various FF speeds.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that mean there is no problem with the drive as far as the XP-32 OS is concerned?

I would say so. I actually suspect a codec/DVD navigator problem but I have no way to prove it, and in some ways it doesn't make sense because PDVD works. I'm also at work so I can't spend any great length of time looking at your logs. Do try different codecs though and see if it makes a difference.

    Tesla,
as mm said, try to use another decoders - in your log it comes always to
2011-09-13 21:22:10.015625 [Debug][MPMain(1)]: Filter: CyberLink Audio Decoder(PDVD9 UPnP) - try to connect: Audio Out
    2011-09-13 21:22:10.921875 [Debug][MPMain(1)]: - failed
so you should try to change at least audio decoder.

No problem ... take your time ... I'm sure you have other things to do at the moment ... just whenever you get a chance.

Can I leave that special core.dll installed for normal daily operation?

Hmm ... I'll have to read-up on how to use a different DVD Decoder. For all these years, I have just been using PowerDVD ... I thought it was the best. I never play physical DVDs on the MePo box. If I'm not mistaken, all these ripped DVDs are now un-encrypted ... so maybe I can use one of the free OSS DVD codecs? Just thinking out-loud here ... I'll figure it out ... if you have time to help me, it would probably be better if you looked at the logs and did your "development magic".

No, it didn't make a difference.

In MePo Config / Codecs / DVD Discs & Images
... I set Video and Audio to ...
    FFDShow Video Decoder
    FFDShow Audio Decoder

Madagascar 1 and 2 work fine from D: drive
They both fail to play properly from the WD-3tb.

    Hi Tesla

Unfortunately even with the additional debug I can't see why this is happening. I see the symptoms, but I don't understand the cause.

Taking Madagascar as an example, from the 3TB drive I see:

So the difference seems to be that DvdValidUopsChange event. Everything else really appears to be identical before that.

To be honest, I'm out of my depth in this code. We need someone like tourettes to take a look... :sorry:
