Hi,

I've just upgraded to Vista (precisely for the EVR), installation went smoothly, but hardware acceleration does not seem to be working in MediaPortal - watching TV, or DVD's. Playing a DVD with PowerDVD application & CPU usage is at 5%, play DVD through MediaPortal (with PowerDVD codec) and CPU usage is up around 60-100% and picture is very jerky with lots of dropped frames, and generally all round poor picture (loss of detail). Same story with HD tv channels; CPU usage hovering in the upper quarter (75-100%) with lots of dropped frames and lacklustre image. I've tried MediaPortal Rc1 standalone, and svn19603; same story both times. EVR is enabled; change it too vmr9 and CPU usage goes through the roof. All the codecs are installed and setup correctly, and I had practically no problems under XP.
Logs are attached - I started MP, entered MyTV, went fullscreen, exited MyTV, played DVD file off the harddrive, exited, closed, gathered logs.
Any help would be much appreciated - and just to advise, I'm new to Vista (but an old hand with Windows)

Cheers,
Trav.

P.S - I've also tried with PowerDVD8 codec. same problem. And when I try GraphEdit, I 'connect to remote graph', select the 'remote filter graph', click OK, and nothing happens, no graph.

MediaPortal doesn´t like EVR- have similar problems. Using Filtergraph on h.264-material: Haali Media Splitter- PowerDVD8 h.264/EVR. Works fine with other DirectShow-Players with 3-7% CPU on 1080p-stuff. Only MediaPortal stutters-also at 3-7% CPU...use external like ZoomPlayer. That helps. For TV you have to switch to a fast software decoder (bye bye HArdware acc) until MediaPortal guys fix the EVR-Trouble...

doesn´t need to be turned off in BIOs, just make shure you DO NOT underclock CPU in Windows´energy options. Gave me a 10 minute headache when i noticed a stutter in my vid playback and couldn´t remember what i changed...;-)

I leave QnQ on in BIOS because then I can undervolt my CPU-Fan ore set up the margin at what temperaturs it starts...

That's a concern; others seem to have Vista, EVR, hardware acceleration working very nicely?!?

Also try turning OFF amd cool'n'quiet in BIOS, just to see if it makes any difference.

Cool 'n' Quiet is disabled, no over or underclocking going on.

I turned on Aero, CPU usage dropped to between 30% and 50% but still getting dropped frames and jerky playback, even with DVD's which I thought in this day and age weren't a problem, even without hardware acceleration.

I'm a bit concerned that GraphEdit is not showing any graph - indicates to me that there is a major problem going on??

Gonna bite the bullet and reinstall Vista, see if I can get any improvement - if not, I guess it's back to XP, which would be a shame as I specifically went the Vista route for the EVR!

Cheers

PowerDVD doesn´t show a graph, because it does not use directshow.
By the way: Google, if your Geforce 8600 GT´s GPU supports h.264 decoding. If not, then more DXVA you´ll never get.

Read my post. Haali/PowerDVD/EVR/in DXVA2.0 works perfectly on my system with ZoomPlayer/PowerDVD/WM-Player/You Name it- but not with MediaPortal in 1080p. In lowRes 720p MP works fine, at 1080p it stutters- other players do not. CPU-Load never above 7%. HOAXes about missing HyperTransport3.0 (5 times faster RAM-Access to SharedMem) in Athlon x2 CPUs are just jokes, because other players work fine and (oh wonder) don´t care about "old" HT2.0

CHeck out your card (h.264 yes/no)

good night

Ugh !! or do you mean the actual player :)

Have you got the latest BIOS\drivers for your motherboard, these could all be factors in your graphics card performance.

You need a specific version to work with Vista, i get mine from the Vista Codec Pack Homepage, its about halfway down.

    That version works great, thankyou!

Sorry, I should have said 'others seem to have MediaPortal, Vista, EVR, hardware acceleration working very nicely?!?'. I really have no interest in using external players, defeats the purpose. At the end of the day, I'm currently unable to even get decent DVD playback in MediaPortal (hardware accelerated).

Yes, my card definately supports hardware acceleration of h.264

    Well,
Vista/EVR/MP works fine for me (at 1080p), for both SD and H264, though this is with an ATI card and Intel processor. I get HA with both PDVD8 and the ATI codecs.

Check that you have Aero enabled. Check that you have hardware acc enabled in the codec settings for MP. Check that you are not loading any post codec video filters (like ffdshow), as these tend to disable HA.

Your logs seem to show that MP is struggling to build a graph with lots of mismatch errors... Do you have anything set in the preferred audio settings in MP (AC3 or whatever), you may want to try turning this off (at least for now), as I've seen that cause problems with graph building.

Also I guess you may want to give RC2 a try...

Sorry if the above is not much help...

    Andy
