Hi MP .. I have an issue with Vista .. Generally and with the TVService that just wont start .. I have read the setup guides and have installed TVServer on 2 x MCE systems with no problems using mysql and mssql, but with vista the service just will not start giving a "1053 the service did not respond in a timley manner" error .. thought it could be a defect and found some posts that said this could be an issue and that older versions would work so have tried about 8 levels going back to July. I have NIS2007 installed, so have disabled the firewall and anti virus (have not de-installed (( yet ))) but that is on the cards for tomorrow .. windows firewall is disabled also .. checked the event log and cannot see the error being dumped into any of the logs which is a little weird, i would have expected a service to generate a log. So, the question is has anyone else seen this ? or anyone with any experience with Vista and the TV Engine has any tips or docs that go through the setup for Vista .. Any help greatly appreciated .. to many nights have been wasted already googling and googling and not finding much info to go on.

Cheers
MarkT

    Hi Mark

Running Vista Ultimate here in Full admin mode (stops you getting the 2869 error) with UAC turned off.

Sorry do not know what the 1053 error actually points to, but have found with Vista if it does not like a driver it spits its dummy out, might be worthwhile, either you have the latest drivers or the ones that came with your pc to see if they make a difference.

ps. if using MP & TVE3 25\10 16361 was a good download for me with vista.

In the MP folder there is something called MPTestool2, run this and follow it's instructions and attach to your post.

    Thanks

Hi Ray, Thanks for you response.

    >> MPTestool2

Will do this sometime over the w/e and paste the output etc..

    >> Running Vista Ultimate here in Full admin mode (stops you getting the 2869 error) with UAC turned off.

I am really new to vista, but will look up how to do this. I had to create a batch file with msiexec /i setup.msi and run as Admin to get the TVEngine to install, but it didi actually install ok .. I have a sneaky feeling that it could be perms related or NIS (even tho deactivated) stopping the service conencting to the controller in time (any idea how to change the timeout ? i took a look in the registry for the service but there was nothing obvious)

Cheers Again and great piece of code overall I have to say .. I am looking fwd to getting the firedtv/s piping out to my 360 with the mce tv client from heerdfoort ..

As a (self-proclaimed) power-user, I immediately disabled UAC as well. This is indeed something worth testing.

Easiest way to do this is:

start > type 'msconfig' > go to last tab called 'tools' > scroll down > select 'disable UAC' > press 'launch' > reboot

thanks for your response, i have turned off UAC and rebooted.. I then removed the TVEngine, applied the 02/11 SVN for MP, then installed 11/02 TVEngine code which installed ok. Clicked on the TVServer and tested the mysql db connection and all ok, then saved the connection details etc .. then the TVService just hangs in the "Starting" State, so I killed it off and started it manually and after about 3 minutes i get the 1053 error .. failed to start the service in a timley manner .. i also created a dump file from the proc, but its 112MB so i will not upload it :) .. i also turned NIS back on too .. i have uploaded the mp.zip from the test tool as requested. i did not start MP, just the TVserver (setupTV, TVservice etc..) let me know if you can spot what is going on from the logs or if u need any more data then just shout .. cheers again .. Mark

As I am about to go to bed, I am too tired to check. But I have a vague memory from the Wiki that the RPC locator service is needed for TV server to run correctly. Maybe you can have a look inside the WIKI for this ?

I'll have a look myself in the morning from the office...

ah, ok, i did see this in the wiki and beleive I have checked this .. however I may have skipped over it lightly as i assumed that this would be switched on by default .. i will check again .. thanks for your response.

i have now enabled "RPC Locator" this in the services panel and rebooted and the service has now started. It will still give the 1053 timeout if I try to recycle it though, but if I just reboot it comes up. So, now I click the TVServer to start the SetupTV and wait and nothing happens .. i am further along than I was, i will run the mp tool again and upload the output.

kin ell .. using the mp test tool, cleared the logs, started the TV Server and it starts up now and conencts to the db .. maybe the last reboot sorted it .. I just love issues like this :/

Cheers all, looks like it has been cracked .. probably the UAC was the main contributor ..

    Thanks
