Watching TV on client (1 Viewer)

For testing, I suggest connecting the laptop to your network router/switch with a cable (and disable the WiFi on the laptop). Get TV working using that connection first (it should work fine, provided IP addresses/hostnames are correct and the Windows firewall isn't blocking things), then try using WiFi for TV.

I don't have an Ethernet port on the Surface unfortunately. Is there something I can change to see if it's a firewall problem?

Just try disabling it temporarily, and/or check in the client firewall settings that 'mediaportal.exe' has full access rights through it for both incoming and outgoing traffic. (At the server it's 'tvservice.exe' that needs access). But as it's been almost working I suspect the firewall settings are OK - the MP installer does try to set it up, but occasionally it fails.

The other thing is to make sure that any 'internet security' or anti-virus software is not causing problems with network traffic i.e. slowing it down too much.

Just try copying a large file from server to client in Windows and see how fast it goes - that should give you an idea (the file copy progress window will tell you the rate in MB/s).

I'm sure there is network speed testing software around, but I've never tried any - anyone else got any suggestions ?

I am copying a 2.8 GB file, the speed varies between 3 MB/s and 8 MB/s but seems to sit around 6 MB/s most of the time. I have attached the logs, I tried earlier tonight.

Is your wireless speed 150 Mb/s, 300 Mb/s or other? ...because 8 MB/s (= 64 Mb/s) seems a little on the slow side.

By the way, in that log file you're again testing with channels I recommended that you avoid. Namely "GO! Western Vic". There are problems on the server side with that one. That being the case, there's no hope of it working on the client.

No I only tried it once in the client, watching Prime7. You are right WIN is not working (signal strength too low?).

So maybe it is a problem with the router? I just checked and multicast forwarding was disabled, but I have enabled it and set the rate to 300 and now I am getting about 8.5 MB/s consistently, but that still seems low? Do I have to enable something on the client also?
