    Hello great people !

I have an old Win7 setup running the 1.29 build and I'm making a new htpc on Win11.

I have made a backup and I have installed it on the new PC - but I can't get it to upgrade to (x64) since it continues to make a separate installation.

Would it be easier for me to go for the (x86) to get my old settings?

What is actually the advantage of (x64) over the (x86)?

If we are talking about Mediaportal, then install x64, and copy all files from the ProgramData/Team Mediaportal folder from another computer (I think so).

The MP releases pan out like this:
    • MP 1.31 is the last release where MP is 32-bit only (runs on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows).
    • MP 1.32 is available as separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions, but TV Server is 32-bit for both versions. Because of this, MP 1.32 is quite difficult to install and get working (requires some fiddling), so this release is not recommended.
    • MP 1.33 and more recent releases are available as entirely 32-bit or entirely 64-bit versions.
Unfortunately you cannot perform an upgrade install from a 32-bit MP to a 64-bit MP. You must perform a complete uninstall of 32-bit MP before performing a first-time install of 64-bit MP.

    For settings, you should:
    • In "TV Server Config", use the "Export" facility to export your TV settings to a file which you later import into the 64-bit MP. Unfortunately there are a few settings that are missing from the export file, so you will need to check all of the settings after importing them.
    • Manually preserve the file "MediaPortal.xml" located in "ProgramData", plus the "InputDeviceMappings" folder.
    • Manually preserve any other config files and databases for plugins that you use. I don't use any optional plugins, so I cannot tell you what to preserve. These files may or may not be usable by the 64-bit version of the plugins. Note: not all plugins are available as 64-bit; the popular ones are, but the more obscure ones may not be.
    • After installing 64-bit MP, restore all of these files. Note: you may still need to fix-up manually some of the settings.

Yes -- simply perform an upgrade install of MP 1.37 32-bit over MP 1.29. :)

What is actually the advantage of (x64) over the (x86)?
Some users are of the view that performance of the 64-bit version is better (faster) than the 32-bit version. However, on my system (an Intel Q6600 CPU running on a Western Digital 5400 rpm green drive), I did not notice any difference when I installed 64-bit MP. But your kilometerage may vary.

Longer term, Intel have stated that they intend producing a range of processors that lack the ability to run 32-bit applications, and Microsoft will do the same for Windows. If that ever happens (which I doubt), you would at that time be forced to upgrade to the 64-bit version of MP.

Thank you both for your good and very detailed advice.

I think I will try to go for the x86 install.
