when running mediaportal I get a process called system running at 99% (2 Viewers)

When going on the perfomance monitor, enable "Show Kernel Times" from the view menu

Is the red bar filling up?
If yes then it's definately something system related (Disk or Network IO)
Check it out and report back ...

yeah there is plenty of red in the bar. This is a brand new motherboard and CPU the only old items are H/D, Memory, DVD-rom. I'll try disconnecting the DVD-Rom and replacing the memory and H/D and report back.

BTW just noticed the IDE H/D is on channel 2 does that matter? It boots up ok.

better use channel 1
also check your BIOS config

bios set to defaults. going to update BIOS now and see if that makes it any better

defaults are not necessarily the best option
esp. concerning IDE/SATA controllers

depends on your motherboard, sometimes you see a SATA/RAID controler default to RAID mode (even with a single disk) etc.

right been into the BIOS disabled almost things not need, like onboard Lan, Sata, FDC, DVD-Rom, etc still no joy.

Getting a dell optiplex GX 520 from work tomorrow and going to try all my parts in that. Each one at a time to indentifiy the item casuing the problem. My guess is the motherboard. I'll post back once I know more.
