Hi

Out of the iMon remote that came with my Silverstone LC10M case, 2 Hauppauge remotes that came with my WinTV HVR-4000s and the Hauppauge MCE remote that came with my WinTV PVR-500 I chose the Hauppauge MCE remote. I think this is effectively a Microsoft MCE remote in Hauppauge clothing.

The iMon remote would perhaps have been neater as the receiver is built in the case's vfd, but I thought it would probably give me a lot of grief trying to get it to work in MediaPortal.

I chose the Hauppauge MCE one because I believed it was the most popular, most standard and therefore best supported. I had a couple of issues installing it on Windows XP Pro, but once these were resolved I can confirm I was happy with my choice.

Thanks for all the advice.

I've ordered an MCE remote now. Should be here in a few days.

Quick question on this. I was about to buy a MS Remote when the guy said to me that it only works on Windows Media Centre. I didnt believe him so he showed me on an XP Prom machine he has loaded there and when the IR is plugged into the USB in XP Pro it asks for a driver. I chose the option 'search on the internet for a driver' (or whatever it says) and it came back with nothing.

So I guess my question is, does MediaPortal work WITHOUT the need for a driver? Or perhaps Media Portal installs the driver upon installation? I just dont want to buy a Microsoft remote, plug it in to my XP Pro machine at home and find it doesnt work...

Thanks!

I do not doubt your knowledge of Media Portal, however:

- I bought a Microsoft Remote and plugged it in to my HTPC (running Windows XP Pro)

- A screen came up requiring a driver to which I just clicked Cancel

- I opened Media Portal, pressed the up and down arrows on the remote and it does not cycle through the menu as i would expect.

Is there something in the settings I need to configure?

Or is there something additional I need to install perhaps?

    There's your problem.

I don't want to seem rude, but if a device requires a driver and you cancel it then you can't expect it to work.

It may be that you just needed to press ok and it would have automatically found it and installed it ...

I've got Windows XP Pro SP2 and I've never needed to install a driver. But apparently some versions of windows (Home, Pro SP1 ?) need you to install a driver, so do a search on the forum and I'm sure you'll find it.

Actually, I think this might be what you need:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...36-4b03-4450-be16-e3dc4fe19b07&DisplayLang=en

If that doesn't work you could always install the replacement driver instead, which comes with the MCE Replacement plugin or can be downloaded separately elsewhere.

    Cheers,

    No worries :)

Your comment yesterday advising 'it will work' mislead me a little as I got the impression that Media Portal installed the driver for you during the install (or something to that affect) hence my question/s 'does MediaPortal work WITHOUT the need for a driver? Or perhaps Media Portal installs the driver upon installation?"

Anyway, appreciate your help. Thanks! I'll do a search for the driver as I have SP1 at the moment.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have the MCE remote (it works great with MP), but I can't seem to train it to turn on/off my TV. Any tips how to train it?

    Thanks,
    Oy.

ANother question I have involving the MCE remote. Will it work on WIN2K? Since I am just starting to delve into the realm of HTPC I am just using an old box I had laying around and it has W2k on it. I don't have anymore XP Licenses so upgrading would mean having to pay money, I would rather not do that until I actually build a REAL HTPC once I have it all figured out :D

Do you mean the button on the remote that you can teach an IR command? Because that's detailed in the user manual.

If you mean using a plugin to transmit IR commands on button presses then you could try the MCE Replacement Plugin or the IR Server Suite, each comes with documentation on how to do that.

    Will it work on WIN2K?

I don't think it will work out-of-the-box. But you should be able to install the replacement driver on a Win2k system if you can't get the eHome driver to work.

All I can say is, give it a try and let us know how you get on. If you try it and you have problems then I can send you a copy of the replacement driver compiled for Win2k just to be sure.

    Good luck,
