From the screen survey carried out by MediaPortal Team only 1 year ago, 33% of users had a resolution of 1920x1080. That means 67% of users do not use this resolution. The largest majority was 1280x720 + 1366x768 at about 36% (I've lumped these together as they are almost identical and split the vote unnecessarily when comparing 'HD Ready' vs 'Full HD').

By creating textures suitable for a 1920x1080 skin you are putting higher workload on HTPCs for the vast majority of users as they have to store larger textures that then need to be downscaled - all using extra resources on the machine whilst MediaPortal is running. Also, if the skin is developed for 1920x1080 then perhaps this will look very cluttered downscaled to 1280x1720 etc.

AFAIK, upscaling a 1280x720 skin to 1920x1080 will look absolutely perfect. So my vote goes to a 720p res, with an optional "high res" pack of images so you can substitute only the pngs if you think that 720 looks bad for some reason. I believe that downscaling a 1080p to 720p is problematic at best.

I have a 1080p screen, but vote for a 720p skin. They scale up perfectly, and if you have 1080p background images then they stay at 1080p so it works perfectly.

Tough call. I think many users use 1080p now, especially since Win7 came out and eliminated the horrible dpi scaling from xp/vista. Though, on the other hand, it think 720p will look good even on a 1080p screen, especially if you make the art in high resolution and downscale it with Photoshop or whatever you use, and it will be less data to load into memory. Do not use 1366x768, either 1080p or 720p.

I think downscaling would give more problems, than upscaling. I currently have a HD Ready tv, but on my Full HD plasma I never had problems with quality. I would vote for HD Ready as well.

Psycho Reptile: what stuff is not possible in MP and will that be different in MP2?
Question 2: What is the problem with 1366x768? Isn't that the native resolution for HD Ready tv's?

    1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 ; skip 1366 x 768.

Would prefer 1920x1080 as that is the res of my 46" TV.

In hindsight, I wish I had voted for alaska, because stark is so similar to what we have already.

I actually like the fact that a lot of skins are 1366x768. I have to run this res to not make MP laggy, not sure why but in 1280x720 I get a sh*tty framerate. Well I actually run 1360x768 (and so I miss 6px, 3px on both sides of the screen abrely noticable) cause of ATi driver issue which can't run 1366 only 1360 or 1368.
I realise though that I am the minority most likely
