Why are ISO files not natively supported (1 Viewer)

This has no doubt been flogged to death but I feel compelled to ask. Most other media players whether hardware or software can play ISO files be they DVD or BR right out of the box. Why is it so hard to get MediaPortal to simply play these files without adding an emulator.?
I installed moving pictures (it is an exe after all) and cannot find it anywhere. As it gives no choice where to install, I have no idea where it did install. There is also no mention of it's existence to enable me to uninstall either. And there is no mention of it within MP. Not even sure what it does apart from helping with but not actually playing DVD's. I tried using Daemontools and set it so when I clicked on an .iso file it opened the program but this just locks up MP. I am at a loss and I did search the forum but nothing that made sense came up. Sorry for the rant but it is taking forever to get MP up and running, it was hard enough getting my TV card to work through it. Anyone know if there is a simple way to just double click an iso file and have it run like a regular video file. Thanks

There is no double clicking inside the mediaportal GUI.
I'm running daemon tools with mediaprotal and have no problems playing iso files, all i did was install daemon tools, then ran mp config and told it where the daemon drive tools exe file was.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've tried single and double clicking the program locks up just the same. I did everything the instruction said and it just doesn't like it. I am running W8 Pro but shouldn't cause these issues. I've tried both Daemon and VCD, no go. Any chance you can answer the Q about why the program can't just play ISO's natively? Thanks

Win8 isn't an officially supported OS.

MP doesn't need to natively support iso as there are lots of 3rd party iso mounters that can be integrated

Have you tried manually mounting an iso in windows, is that working?

Not sure what you mean by double clicking

Well you mentioned that it's not supported and I was just clarifying that I'd tried both double and single clicking to no avail.
Could you tell me whether the "moving pictures" plug in will play ISO's and where it went, being an .exe and all? Although from the gist of it I somehow doubt it will. I may have to see if I can get MP to plug in to XBMC if I cant get it to play, but finding a plug in worth a damn may be a problem. Thanks anyway though.
Oh and yes iso's play off the virtual drive no probs out of MP.

MP is not like a regular application. It has been designed to be compatible with remote controls. Since remote controls have no concept of double-clicking, a double click doesn't do anything special anywhere in MP.

It would be overkill to hook up XBMC just to play ISOs. When configured correctly, MP will mount the ISO file automatically and play it for you when you click (or select with enter) the ISO that you want to play. It really is seamless. The key thing is to get the virtual drive set up. Since you say it is working outside MP, the key thing to look at now will be in MP configuration. This info may help:

Yeah that's the page I used to get this far. I'm considering doing a refresh of 8 and trying it from scratch in case some of the myriad bits and pieces (drivers and progys etc) I've used to get this far may be the cause of the problems. I quite like MP so I hope that works. Really appreciate your help though, Thanks :)

Just a couple of quick points for you that may clear some things up.
-Moving Pictures is a plugin for MediaPortal and is accessible from within MediaPortal or MediaPortal Configuration. Moving Pictures is not installed to your hard drive such that it can be accessed directly (by clicking an exe file). The exe file to which (I think) you are referring is the installer program only.
-As mentioned above, get the ISO mounted using only daemon tools first (ignore MediaPortal, Moving Pictures until you can mount the ISO and it appears as a drive in Windows. After that MediaPortal, Moving Pictures can plan an ISO.

+1 Also annoyed by the separate installation of Daemon tools + the config of virtual drive

There must be some kind of way to integrate an open source emulator or auto install Daemon tools or similar by default?

I assume the more than half of Mediaportal use the Virtual drive config - But we all need to install it separately :-(

Yes - virtual drive works - But it definitely could use a a redesign to install/config more seamless.
