Well, watching deinterlaced material in VLC is a not a pleasant experience.

VLC is great if you only think "ease of use" (no codecs req.) and streaming etc - but not quality, IMO.

in the past, MP came with the option to choose between VMR9 and Overlay.
This was removed quite a while ago, since the amount of effort to develop both streams with such a small development team was just too great.
The choice was made to go with the most modern solution, that gave the best results for the majority of users.

On the issue of power consumption, a modern light duty GFX card such as an onboard 6150 or add on 7300 probably uses less power than an older non DX card, before you even take into account the extra load on the CPU.

I simple want the elegance of a tiny/quiet HTPC client and the ease of use of MediaPortal, A single interface for all my living room entertainment needs.
DX9 is currently a showstopper for me and many others.

Well, so maybe you should take a look at VDR, MythTV or Freevo :)

Rofl - I guess with squared eyes you don't notice the quality difference between the ugly deinterlaced VLC tv and VMR9... Despite of VLC's higher cpu usage. However why don't you just use it then?

Well, atleast it works on my laptop... MP doesn't. :p

Marcus, Do you know which was the last version to allow overlay?
Do I need to rollback MP, TVServer, both ?

    Thanks

Maybe 1,5 years back, so TVE3 won't be supported in that version.

In my opinion, a real solution for lightweight HTPCs-client is this one or something similar:

    iPCMAX - Biscuit SBC boards

It has got hardware MPEG2 decoding, TV-outs as well as digital outs, network card, sound card and PCMCIA option. No DX9 but capable of ffdshow of hardware based decoding with power consumption around 10 watts! That's what I call "an embedded system".

I was under the impression that DX9 was just a set of features and didn't denote the power of those features, I would think that any grfx card produced today be it AGP, PCIe, integrated or add-on card would support modern features.

For example I have a nvidia FX5200 it has no fan and doesn't have that much power but it has certain feature that MP makes use of to deliver a very nice looking interface without eating up my CPU time.

Of course if I wanted to play cutting edge games not only would I require those features but I would need a lot of power behind them and some big fans!

If your "PC" is old enough to not support DX9 then maybe it's time for an upgrade?

The same argument could be used to say lets not use MMX technology because there is a minority who don't have that feature.

Fact is most people want a nice shiny interface.

    MP1.3

and TVE3 did not exist, so would not be compatible.

    Times moved on.
