Here's how I solved it, using Nvidia ION graphics. (This is actually a variant of the solution proposed by grooves12)

    1) Use VNC to login remotely.
    2) Right click desktop and select 'Screen Resolution'. Or goto Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\Screen Resolution.
    3) Click 'Detect'.
    4) Select 'Another display not detected'.
    5) Set 'Multiple Displays:' to 'Try connect anyway on: VGA'.
    5) Select 2nd display, set 'Multiple Displays:' to 'Show desktop only on: 2'
    6) Set correct resolution (720p in my case).
    7) Select 1st display, set 'Multiple Displays:' to 'Show desktop only on: 1'
    8) Select 2nd Display, click 'Multiple Displays:' select 'Remove this display'.

An easier alternative (as least for the ordinarie user) would perhaps be if someone could add a workaround (setting) in MP to ignore OnSizeChanged events when in fullscreen. What happens here is when the the HDMI display is lost Win 7 tries the VGA display (1024x768) and then switches back to the HDMI (720p) display. Such an workaround may have negative a impact in other scenarios, but when in fullscreen the resolution shouldn't really change or?

Unfortunately, the VGA screen only allows up to 1600 x 900 and my TV is 1920x1080. Thanks anyway.

This problem is such a fly in the ointment for MP. I hope they can implement a workaround soon :(

I'm stunned that the devs must not own HDMI AV amps.

Try this, In Advanced Settings->Monitor make sure that 'Hide modes...' is unticked (Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\Screen Resolution).

Then goto Nvidia Screen Settings and change the resolution.

In this way I managed to set 1920x1080 (@24Hz) for the VGA display.

Edit; this was on my main system based on a Geforce 9300 mGPU, which is very similar to the ION.

Well I managed to get 1920x1080 on the fake VGA monitor but it only allows 25 or 30Hz. (ATI)

In any case, it didn't make any difference and the problem persists. Thanks anyway.

EDIT: I rebooted and now it's working!

I wonder how many problems the reboot has solved :)

Glad you got it working, the refresh rate doesn't matter in this case.

    Hi guys

I wanted to thank everyone for your valuable contribution: I have solved this annoying problem, according to your specifications. :D

    In particular:
    - on my system, editing the registry was not enough, I only got to resize from 1024x768 to 1600x1080
    - I also tried to disable "AMD External Events Utility" service, but to no changes
    - to connect with UltraVNC from a remote PC, with TV and AV-receiver off and following your guides, I set a resolution to the monitor using Windows in this condition (VGA), setting the maximum (1920x1080 30Hz interlaced)

I tried to boot and resume from hibernation in different conditions and finally MediaPortal remains at 1920 x1080 :D:D

I have switched back to vista. Then all problems completely gone.
Same time update MP to 1.2.2 (from 1.1.3)

For those that have experienced this issue without having your PC in standby (ie just turning your display off/on), can you please post your display make/model?

Same problem here. I have Toshiba 37WL66z TV and AMD A4 3400+ APU the newest ATO Drivers

I managed to resolve this issue using VNC method. ATI4200 HD and Panasonic 42" Plasma TV, no amp with HDMI, It is working fine now.
I'm having one more very anoying problem, that is: if I start the HTPC with the TV turned off, and I turn on the TV later, the TV is not detected, and remains blank. I have to restart the HTPC or log in with VNC and click Detect display in ATI. Is there anything I could do to get the TV recognized automatically?
