I know a lot of others have this issue as well, so I would like to encourage all to post your experiences in this thread as well so we can get this fixed once and for all.

Bascially, when playing WMV movies with 5.1 audio, the audio comes out as 2 channel. It's supposed to be feeded through AC3Filter for a transcode, but this doesn't happen. When playing the same file in WMP everything works perfectly.
The AC3Filter tray icon (if enabled) doesn't even show up when the movie is being played in MP.

I believe someone managed to manually edit a GraphEdit graph to get it working, but I'm not sure if anybody else managed that.

GSpot reports the following audio information:

0x0162 (Windows Media Audio 9 Professional) CBR
0x01:48000Hz 440 kb/s tot (6 chnls)

Attached my MP log.

Having the same problem here, running Windows Media Center Edition. Media Portal won't use AC3 filter and neither will Windows Media Center Edition (which is what I was using before MP). All other players such als Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player can play it perfectly and it sends a 5.1 signal to my reciever over SPDIF.
Very annoying since this is the major reason for having bought a HDTV, to play 720p wmv files I downloaded from usenet.

I must say I'm a bit confused and disappointed in the lack of official replies to this issue. It has existed over a year now to my knowledge.

Shall we just delete our WMVHD files or?

I just avoid these files and find mkv versions instead. It would be nice to see it working though.

Yeah well, fiddling around with the XBMC Linux port at the moment and no offense and all that, but all I can say is that MP will be gone from my computer when it's more stable (not necessarily even in release).

hi..
I have the same problem also with MediaPlayerClassic. Its still the same with the "wmadmod.dll"...
But.. isnt this a bug in Windows? The lib is a part of the WindowsMediaPlayer. So Microsoft has to fix it. ..?
If yes. then this is really stupid from microsoft. They have wmv samples and movies and you have to listen only to
stereo sound. This cant be true... For waht the ... they release wmv movies with 5.1 ?
cheers!

hi,
same problem here, ac3filter works fine in mplayer classic & wmp. but i can´t get mp to decode with ac3filter for wma or mp3 soundtracks. ac3/dts work fine and use ac3filter, tough.
:(
