This is excellent news! It's a real pain keeping 4 mp boxes up-to-date. This would really make everything so much easier. Looking forward to hearing about your progress. Great job!

Looks like both reads and writes work. I'm going to work on adding the setting to the configuration app next, but if anyone has a burning desire to try it out just PM me and I'll get the dll and installation instructions to ya.

It would also be great with an option in the configuration program to change the paths to the media files (in the databases). That would make the transition from a standalone MP to a server-solution real easy. It would also be good if you run out of disc space and are about to move the movie-files to a new disc.

If I follow you correctly, the way you currently have your database built is with local paths to all the files (i.e. D:\Movies) rather than shared folder paths (i.e. \\mediaserver\Movies)? If that's the case I suppose a script could be run to update the root path... (replace all D:\ with \\mediaserver\). Is this what you're thinking of?

Great idea, i'm also have many htpc and i want to share content & installation...
Can also be useful a command-line command to specify the MediaPortal.xml config file, for example "\\server\mp\mediaportal.exe -config kitchen.xml"...

I dont think that running MP itself from a central location would be better... maybe an "updater" utility that would copy stuff...

Running apps over the network, even gigabit isnt great for performance.... I've tried a ton of apps and it nevers runs as if it were local.

I say, keep MP copies local, keep database and media files central. Also, CD-Rip, TV Recordings, etc, should always be kept central.

One thing springs to mind: using a single database, how do you specify what computer will do the recording? I assume all MP machines would attempt to record a show (assuming all have tv cards)... maybe protection needs to be added for this, so you can assign the recording to the current machine)

Good question, and not one I've thought out as I currently don't have a TV card (some day I hope....). I haven't even looked at how the scheduling for recording programs works.

I guess I'd start by trying to maintain scheduling information locally, making sure the recorded file gets archived to the central file store and the video database is updated with the new entry. Although I do think it would be cool to be able to assign recordings to any MP machine from any MP machine.... food for thought anyways.

Again, I haven't thought this out very well and don't know how the current architecture works.

That was precisely what I was thinking about!
