I just use the standard windows firewall behind a router. I am not running any antivirus software as all the other computers on the network are and the only downloaded files I put on my HTPC are video files.

I have extensivley tested symantec corporate edition at work as I use it on 500+ pc's, and I get on average about a 25% slowdown in system speed with it installed and auto protect turned on. Its a truely aweful piece of software.

Cant say Ive ever had a problem, its probably the best one Ive seen and its not bloated like other bits of antivirus software. What version were you running?

I've been using NOD32 as my anti-virus for the past two years, its inexpensive and very resource friendly. No infections and its received many awards.

I also use NOD32, it has been recommeded by many previous HTPC users. It is VERY resource friendly!

    Thanks for all the replies!

It looks like AVG or NOD32 are the way to go ...

    Cheers,

    avast for my anti virus

avast only has pop ups when it updates the database or when it finds a virus but you may be able to turn those off.

Avast! is a great program, I really like it running on my HTPC and can absolutely recommend it. :D

The "pop ups" for updates disappear after 5 or so seconds, so they are not a problem for me.

I run AVG Free on my HTPC, extremly fast and protects well. One big benefit with AVG is that it update itself in the background when needed on the system startup by default. Highly recommended for those users that use MP as shell startup.

Im using 10.1.0.400 at the moment at work, its a nice piece of software in terms of deploying it and running it centrally on a network, but a horrible memory hog. For instance, by default it searches the hard disk everytime a computer is turned on. It runs 4+ services in the background at boot time, and also has to shut these off when the system is shutdown which takes time too. Last an not least it puts about 1000 keys in your registry :) If anyone has ever had to manually un-install symantec they will know!

im using the windows firewall and a corporate version of McAfee VirusScan 8.0i Patch 13.

The best thing i like is the ability to setup direcorty exclusions. I have excluded my reording directory and the actualy MP install directory
