Hauppauge HVR-2250 QAM issues
I have searched and read the forums, but I can not seem to find a solution to my problem. So if a solution has been posted, I apologize in advance. I am using Windows 7 32-bit with the Hauppauge HVR-2250 using Charter cable.
I know our cable is sending out plenty of QAM channels (most encrypted, but enough that aren't) because my TV picks them up along with the Pinnacle HDTV 800i (using its own software). I bought the HVR-2250 for its two tuners along with its hardware encoding of analog (which the 800i doesn't and MediaPortal requires) for the cable stations unavailable as unencrypted QAM. I am not using a cable box.
Haupp driver 7.3.0.26198 (7/16/08) - from CD (I believe its also known as 4.7 on their website)
With this driver, the ATSC/QAM tuner shows up twice (good thing as it is a dual tuner) as ATSC Hauppauge WinTv-7614 BDA ATSC/QAM Tuner (Type: ATSC). But by scanning for QAM using all five settings, no channels are found. In fact, the scan just races through the QAM (unlike my TV & 800i) in about one minute. More specifically, the first physical channel at 75000 QAM256 takes the longest (no results) before it zips through the rest of the frequencies. All the results come up red and are listed as QAM64. It seems to me that QAM256 is being completed ignored or unrecognized.
Now for comparison I've been checking out MCE within Windows 7. I installed PlayReadyPC_x86 to enable QAM support. With this driver, the digital tuner is not recognized either... which from my research was the reason for...
Haupp BETA drivers 7.5.6.26364 (12/29/08) and 7.5.27.27007 (1/9/09)
MP TV-Server: Now the tuners are unlisted under the TV-Service drop down menu, but do show up as Hauppauge WinTv-7614 BDA ATSC/QAM Tuner twice (Type: Unknown). Since I can not select them, I can not scan for channels.
MCE: Recognized that I had 2 digitial tuners along with 2 analog tuners. Needed to manually enter the channels for local stations, but community channels were found automatically. (It almost makes you think that Charter doesn't want you to know about the free local HD channels.) For all practical purposes, the HVR-2250 works fine in Windows 7 Media Center.
My goal was to use MediaPortal as my media server for my 780-g based machine. However, the availability of Windows 7's MCE for the next few months and its ability to now use QAM (unlike my OEM-version of Vista on another machine) is forcing me to reconsider.. I have spent so much time installing, experimenting, updating, and reading forums to resolve this issue that this version of MCE already does. The reason I have put this much effort into getting MP to work is I thought the addons/plugins/features had greater potential.
I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks.
