The thing is that the delay in sound doesn't happen when you pause the playback and resume within a few seconds; while the sound is delayed when there has been a delay before resuming. I don't understand why there is a difference dependent on how long you pause.

This is not a serious issue so far as I am concerned. I only raised it out of curiosity.
Could be because (for example) of not enough memory (RAM).
That's why I asked if you could try with a more powerfull PC to see if it appears.
I suppose you already know that but, CPU doesn't make all.
    RAM is important, GFX too.
And OFC, an appropriate bus speed to give the best possible communication between all chips.
Also, take care of @CyberSimian infos wich are all the time good advices ;)

Sadly, because the machines I bought are specifically designed to work with Windows 11, I can't install Windows 10 and install all of the drivers. Believe me, I tried.

None of my other machines have Windows 11 installed so I cannot make a valid comparison.

But I do have a less powerful machine with 4GB RAM and Windows 10 installed so I'll see what happens with that machine.

Just installed MP1 on another machine with Windows 10, 4GB RAM, 4 Pentium processors (1.10 GHz) and there were no sound delays on resume.

Therefore, I have to conclude that it's something to do with the SONY HD driver that is in Windows 11.

The machine above is a big sluggish, as would be expected, but the i3 processors on my MP client machines make all the difference.

Of course, I could throw more RAM at my client machines but I haven't really needed to because I am not using them for anything else.

OK and, did you play with MP audio settings (where win7, win10, master volume,...)
What is behind your soundcard ?
    AV receiver ?
Can you try with bitstream ?
Or, use HDMI audio instead of soundcard ?

I haven't used MP's audio settings before. There seem to be two stream settings:
    Prefer AC-3 sound;
    Enable AudioDualMono.
Do you think either of these is relevant?

The machine in question is connected to a smart TV using an HDMI connector. How do I set MP1 to use HDMI audio instead of the sound card?

Also, how do I set to use bit stream?

If you think it could be Sony HD driver problem then, the goal is to not use (or the less possible) your soundcard.
Settings for that are not inside MP, it's windows settings but, you can change the default audio renderer Somewhere...
The best is in BIOS settings where you disable your soundcard.
With disabled, if you hear sound then sound is OFC given by HDMI.
Good free software also is fxsound.
