hey guys , im trying to set up the blaster to change my sky channels is there any titorials on how to do it?
i cant find any settings in tv3
and when i open MCE blaster learn i cant get it to do anything

I believe the topic of New Zealand orientated threads came up previously. Does anyone have specialist knowledge or inside knowledge of this MP Forum to go about creating a New Zealand Thread (Sticky maybe) with sub-threads based on the various topics such as Card tuning, Using MCE Plugin or IR Blaster, EPG methods, etc.

Right now this thread, "Calling all MP New Zealanders (Both of you!!)", started with great intentions, has become disjointed and at times time-consuming because all the topics are mixed up. For any one of us researching a specific topic, often there is a run of posts all on a different topic. There are posts on topics which should be in the Threads which are dedicated to the topic already like MCE Plugin for blasting.

I know I ask some stupid questions at times illustrated by the fact that when I look harder later, I find the answer in this Forum. This means that we should all look with dedication first before asking the question. No doubt I'll reqret this rant but at least I have fessed up.

I have to agree with you John - this thread is a wealth of knowledge, but trying to extract that knowledge is a bit of a nightmare! I would be supportive of a way of tidying it up! But it would also good to have a corner of the forum that is New Zealand specific.

Some believe it is time to start a series of threads which stay specific to New Zealand. This means that items best dealt with in existing threads, often started by the software authors, should always be scanned before assuming it is a New Zealand Specific issue.

All this info should be in the wiki, the thread should feed in to it. I'm as guilty as the next man about not getting around to building up the wiki but it is on my todo list! This has come up before and I do think it's pointless to keep answering the same questions over and over again in the forum the wiki is perfect for that sort of stuff.

PVR s/w for New Zealanders

Changing the current topic direction somewhat - but for those folk that have tried GBPVR I wonder if you can give some insights as to why you ended up using MP?

I'm currently a hacked TIVO user (and this box works brilliantly within the constraints of its design) but have for awhile been looking at building either a GBPVR or MP server/client system.

Both sets of s/w work well for Kiwi's, look great and have fantastic technical support, plus of course the price is right

So if you made a choice, it would be great to hear why you settled on Media Portal?

For me, the choice came down to better utilisation of the two DVB-S cards that I have available. I only have two PCI slots and Media Portal is the only software right now that can record all channels from a single satellite transponder using just one tuner. So we can record TV1 and TV2 with a single tuner, with two tuners TV1,2 and 3 all at the same time. GBPVR (as good as it is) just cannot do that and neither can MythTV. One of the options also promoted (that I have not yet got to work) was the ability to combine multiple back end server into a single server farm to share TV Tuners.

As fas as usability goes they are very similar, however the skins for MP are outstanding. In my view, GBPVR is marginally more reliable in that once you set it you can forget it. With MP I am never truely sure that its recorded what I want till I check it. Last Thursday for instance, I setup to record a program but what I got was 83 one minute recordings - totally useless and no clue why. But that's only happened once. For the most part TVEngine3 behaves itself and does what it is asked. One of the other advantages of GBPVR was the web interface. However the fine work here by Big_Kev has solved that and we now have a great web interface for MP.

I prefer the client option in MP. It just works flawlessly. When I tried that in GBPVR I had some issues and still have not got it to work. The only trouble I did have with client mode in MP was caused by codec's and that was fixed fairly quickly with support from this thread.

MythTV is out of the question unless you have a Linux pointy head on hand. Getting support for Linux is quite demanding although there are a number of MythTV support places. Having said that, getting technical support here is not always that easy, whereas I have never experienced an unanswered thread in the GB forum.

So there are advantages both ways, but for my money MP is the option I prefer. You probably need to try both, but starting here will not hurt and you will have an installation running very quickly. If you go with the inbuilt TVEngine you will have a system running in way less than an hour. If you want some of the other benefits (i.e. client mode, multi channel recording off one card etc) you will need to install TVEngine3. Whichever - good luck and you will find help here.

That's the big for one for me. I've not tried GBPVR because I just couldn't give up that feature.

Thanks guys - very useful info.

For me cards won't be to much of a problem as with a 3xPCI server I'll have all the simultaneous channels I need. If this goes up there is always a FloppyDTV firewire card, or a USB tuner.

I am very impressed by the MP skins, but with PRVX2 (the new interface) GBPVR looks great.

Definitely reliability is top of the list - I think trying the two is the way to go. MythTV is definitely out as I don't have the time or energy to learn what I would need to know (but I do admire the Linux crowd ) .
