alright, i've tried getting sky to work via media portal and so far i haven't had much success (although the internet has only just been connected today so that might change things.)

from what i've gathered so far though, to get sky digital and free view channels to work via media portal i'm going to need to get another DVB-S card.

at the moment though i'd be happy if i could just get sky to work via media portal (cause man sky has one ugly interface now that i've had MP experience) and freeview can wait for a week whilst i scrape some coin together.

my question is for sky to work via media portal should i just take the cable from the RF out (in the sky decoder) and attach that to the DVB-S input of the hauppauge (the rf out is a standard analogue socket, so i would have to chop off the other end of the cable and put on an h-type connector). So far i've tried taking the cable from RF out to Analogue and had 0 success scanning channels.

if pictures would help let me know.
    thanks.

@Omen: No RF out and DVB-S are very different. DVB-S can only be connected to a dish. Also you cannot receive sky directly from the dish in to the DVB-S card. this is becuase the of the encryption sky uses can only be decoded using the sky digital STB. DVB-S can only be used to receive freeview.

To get sky in to mediaportal you need to take the video output (preferably s-video) output from the sky STB and run that in to an analog card. (preferably a Hauppaug PVR-150). Your dvb-s card (what model?) may have an aux analog s-video input but it's probaly not that good because it will not do hardware (MPEG2) compression like that PRV-150 will.

Once you have the sky stb connected to an analog video/audio input on your mediaprotal PC you need a way for mediaportal to change channels on the sky stb. This is where infra-red blaster comes in. They come with microsoft MCE remotes and also with some Hauppauge PVR-150 bundles.

    Hope this helps.

Ok I created the two missing columns I had in the database by hand and that has made an improvement. Now the channels appear normally when I select TV Channels.

Geekiegeek, I use a DVB-S card for everything now and I have the tuning parameters, but thanks for responding with them. I am sure my problem was the failure to update the database with the new structure as Mcraenz suggested.

Now to get the client working again. What caused me to upgrade was the lack of EPG. My EPG was being loaded normally until yesterday when it just stopped.

    Cheers Mike

@mruane: If I were you I'd delete the database, un-install and re-install TV3 and let it re-create the DB just to be sure everythign is as it should be. (maybe don't bother unless you have any issues??)

Also update to the latest SVN(15972) there seem to be some important fixes for the heartbeat stuff.

Omen, I am setting up sky with free view at present. I am using a ATI Theater 550 analog card via s-video for sky and a Haupauge HVR3000 for DVB-S (freeview). I will be working on getting the channel changing working over the next few days and will post my successfull (hopefully) configuration.

i'm using a hauppauge hvr-4000 i'm not sure what you mean by s-video analogue, but here is the card and it's specs.

so in a nutshell though, if i connect the RF output from the sky decoder into the Analogue input on the hauppauge and then scan for channels, they should eventually show up?

only one channel will show up as the channels themselfs are only on the sky decoder - i.e you change channel on the decoder, not your TV.

Are you useing TVE3 or just MP?

I found that a new version of IR Server was released last night - this seems to work well with TVE3 if just MP I have read that myblaster works well.

I'll post back on how I get on with my blaster setup which may also help. One thing I found with my Motorola STB is that the blaster eye thing seems to work from an inch or so away from the STB where as under Windows MCE it was stuck on the STB.

i just use MP although now i'm no longer flatting and have my own place it looks like TVE3 will be more useful but i'm not sure if i'm smart enough to take that on yet.

+ i'd like to at least have a fully working MP as a backup once i do decide to take the leap into TVE3

All fixed again. The client installed fine on Windows XP but generate the ax error when installing on Vista, otherwise all is back to normal.

Omen: I have not used the A/V input ports on the card to get SKY in with Media Portal. Others are doing it though so it should be possible. I know that when using TVE3 its not the same as TVE2. With TVE2 I believe you can setup a channel to get EPG from the satellite but its program material from the AV inputs. I have not found a way to do that in TVE3. Stroll back through some of the pages in this thread for more help.

    Cheers Mike

mcraenz: Thanks, deleting the database did not help, I even reinstalled the whole 2.3 RC2 release but installing the TVE3 Build 15960 did not update the database by adding the extra columns to the required table. I added them manually and that fixed the problem. However I will go get the latest build and install that. Thanks for the advice.

    Cheers Mike

Hey guys, I now have a fully working system apart from one small thing - I changed the ServiceID setting for TV One thinging it might change the channel order (I now know how to do this properly). Problem is I didnt write down what it was (I know, I know) and now I get no guide data for that channel.

Can someone have a look at their settings and let me know what it should be?

Also I'll be putting some instructions up on my blog, mainly around getting the Sky epg to work with an analog card and getting MCE\Sky remote\blasting working. Once done I will post a link here - perhaps someone with more Wiki nouce could then add either the link or the information to the NZ Wiki.

One last thing - thanks to all on this thread for your helpfull tips but in particuliar mruane and mcraenz.

The TV ONE Service ID on in my configuration is 1035. Try that.

PS Geegiegeek, if you figure out how to get the SKY EPG data from the satellite but audio/video from the AV input on say a PVR150/500 I will be really interested to know how that is done. I am getting the SKY EPG data loading no problem, but with TVE3 I cannot see how to redirect the input from the Sat card to the AV input ports on the PVR150. TVE3 does not seem to permit this.

    Cheers Mike
