whats 10gb? Are people actually using 10gb wetnerks?? I mean really! 10GGigabits/second?? thats 1.25 Gigabytes every Second!!! I know HD is high bit rate but the way I see it and someone correct me if I've got my maths wrong... A blueray or HD-DVD is what? 50Gigabytes?? 50 Gigabytes over a 2 hour movie, that's about 7Megabytes/second so a grand total of 56Megabits/second. So I guess my 100mbps 3com switch shoud keep me going for a while?

My house is all set up for 1Gb networks (well except for the crappy ADSL router but then that only gets used for Internet access anyway) and I'd definitely be pushing 100Mb speeds every so often. It's at the point now that if you shop around there's stuff all difference between 100Mb and 1Gb equipment. Anyway it wasn't that long ago that 100Mb was all you needed anywhere so why not be prepared for 10Gb. As far as I'm aware 10GbE will work on Cat6 up to 100m so I should be good to go if I even need to go that way.
Oh and to use but alter your numbers a bit. 7MB = 56Mb which is getting pretty close to the practical maximum of a 100Mb network. So you might be able to watch your HD movie across the network but your TV show @ say 6-12Mb/s recording across the network to your server might be getting a bit strangled for bandwidth. And don't even try downloading that show on your ADSL2 connection at 10Mb/s at the same time or you'll be in choppy hell.
Yeah good points. I've actually got a 1Gbps switch i was given but unfortunately my MediaPortal network client is a laptop with 100Mpbs. Oh well one day

Just dreaming. I'll be the first to volunteer for fibre to the node though. I think the telecom rep was stunned when he saw that we had a patch panel at home already. I ended up having to patch his connections in though as he wasn't used to working on a Cat6 board and his punch down tool wasn't strong enough.

Pretty much and he was afraid he was going to break my patch panel with the force required to punch down the connections.
i've had that same problem with telecom techies before as well. worst part was trying to convince them my network was fine and yes indeed my internet problems lied in their exchange.
I really don't see 10gb networks being used anywhere in the future as the newest technology for hard drives has them running at 450MBs to me that still leaves a gigabit network operating faster than a hdd.
I'm not sure what exactly you guys are doing wrong with your cat5e networks either, I've got mine running at 1 gigabit through out the whole house no problems, my longest run is nearly 40m too, i've also set up quite a few at work that are yet to show any problems.

MB or Mb? A new Caviar SATA 3GB was tested by tomshardware at a peak speed of 754.4Mb/s and an average of 602.4. Sure it's slower than 1Gb but it's actually higher than what you'd practically get out of 1GbE at the moment. And that's right now so what about in 5-10 years time?
Once the wire is in I don't want to touch it again and since it's in plush boxes mounted on the walls it'll be a pain to change.
Oh and BTW just had a look before and 10GBASE-T is speced to work on Cat6 up to 55m and the proposed Cat6a up to 100m. Cat5/5e is not supported.
Cat5e SHOULD work with 1GbE but if there is too much interference Cat6 WILL work better. Again if putting stuff cleanly in the wall like I have you'll hardly want to rip it out if there happens to be an interference problem in the future. As for when I've had problems in the past it's always when the network is pushed. Replace Cat5e with Cat6 cable and the throughput goes up. Try it sometime and you might be shocked.
Yeah if you're doing a popper job of it, it defiantly worth using cat6. i.e. If I were building a house yeah sure. I guess I didn't really think of it like that since I'm renting it was just a case of a drill and staple gun and lots of cobwebs under the house!
