Can I make the TV Server steam need less bandwidth? (1 Viewer)

Hi, my question is this, can I transcode/compress the steam that the MP TV-Server outputs to a remote MP client?

I've got a secondary computer in my home and I'd like to be able to stream TV to that one as well, but I'd like it to have a lower bitrate as to consume less bandwidth, is that possible?

The iPiMP plugin can help you here, it will allow transcoding to mobile devices and other clients as well (MEDIAPORTAL - iPiMP).

There may be other solutions as well. You can also connect directly to the streams and/or setup VLC to transcode the streams. But no solution is near the useability factor of MP.

Not that I know of. Theoretically it would be possible to transcode MPEG 2 in real time, but you'd need a *very* powerful CPU to do h.264 in real time. Either that or something that could take advantage of the GPU...

Actually for SD content it's not that bad. My Core2Duo 2.67 GHz runs at ~25% when live-transcoding an sd channel with Tv4Home (streaming to android). HD channels need ~60 %.

Of course the difficulty depends on the quality and compression factors. The higher the quality and smaller the container you have to squash it into, the harder a processor has to work. Signal from analog tuners without hardware encoders get encoded to MPEG 2 in real time by TV Server (well, an encoder supervised by TV Server). On my 2.4 GHz Core 2 that takes between ~15% and ~40% CPU. Doesn't look that great though it is proof it can be done...

Well it's not MediaPortal, but if you just need a windows tool, I know that MikeLowrey is working on that for his TvViewer. It should also be possible to implement this in a MediaPortal plugin.

Perhaps due to the fact that my extra client is the bedroom laptop which is on wifi? (but even at that there should be at least one more person with the same question?) (


BTW: regarding TvViewer.. yes.. that looks #€&/%€ promising ( but do you know if you can have it working on MP 1.2.0? I've read a few threads on it and seems like it was dependant upon WebServices which became MPWebServices which no longer is developed -> but then MPWebStream came about?

That TvViewer is no longer developed (by me at least). If someone else wants to continue: All the sources are available on the google code page. OxanMikeLowrey is now working on a new standalone tv viewer that uses the new Tv4Home backend (which is actively developed and has transcoding included). I'm not sure how far away a preview version is though.
