I had a similar problem until last night.
i read this:
Known Issues - MediaPortal Wiki
and did this
Solution:
Go to: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
Open the host file with notepad (On Vista and Windows 7 you might have to take ownership of the file first)
make sure that the file contains at least these 2 lines
save the file and reboot your PC (make sure that it does not get saved as hosts.txt!)
i also turned off my windows firewall and replaced it with the comodo firewall.
it now seems perfectly stable and i can watch tv on the computer connected to the server with a hub, but i'm still having trouble with the computers connected via a router. it may be a problem with the port (as you just mentioned, thanks), so i'll try that next
