Hi, thanks for all the advice.

I'm toying with the idea of buying a new GFX card anyhow, but this has to be a codec issue as the video plays ok with VLC player!

I've installed a free demo of Nvidias Purevideo but WMP still pick MPV as the default codec, how do I uninstall MPV so see what Purevideo does.

I thought that MPV\MPA codecs were really good and the preferred codecs to use, is this wrong? is Purevideo better?

Hi robo, the MPA/V decoders are free and not very good. Their primary advantage is that they cost nothing. In the case of mpeg2 decoders, open source has not really produced anything that can rival commercial decoders. VLC does use their own internal decoder I believe (which is open source :D).

On a bit of a whim I just went out at lunchtime and bought a shiny new ASUS 7600GS 512MB, popped home and tried it with the latest drivers.

Still got the stutter though, lol.

That rules out the GPU anyhow :)

How can I uninstall codecs to force WMP to use Purevideo?

    robo,

you can set the default decoders to use within MP from the MP configuration

Yeah I was trying to troubleshoot the problem using WMP, I've since used Radlight Filter Manager to unregister MPV\MPA and now its using Purevideo but still stuttering.

Last night I swapped the recording engine to create .ts files instead of .mpg files, and it still creating stuttering recordings. I'm unsure now whether that does point to a codec issue or a hardware issue, like HDD, Sata controller, or USB tuners!

I had a problem that looks like the one you're having. The cause was my Hauppauge HVR-900 tuner (USB 2). Yours is PCI, but I recently learned that internally it's in fact two USB tuners connected to a PCI USB hub (so it connects to PCI, but works as USB tuners). Now that I've moved to a (true) PCI card, stuttering has gone, and I'm using the same codecs, configuration for Media Portal (I just removed the old cards, added the new one and assigned the channels).

Of course the only way to know is using a PCI tuner, one that is relly PCI. I think the Hauppauge WinTV Nova T is (some knows for sure?). But of course this costs money and I unless you can get one from a friend or someone, to try before buying, there are no warranties :( .

    Did you check this?

I checked that setting on my machine, and it was set to "default directsound device" So I dont think that is causing the issue.

So far though I have seemed to resolve the issue. I uninstalled the MPA/MPV codecs and installed the old version of the purevideo codecs that came with my videocard. I had to revert to the older 84.21 nvidia driver to get the TV out to stop flickering, but once I installed the purevideo codec the freezing seems to gone from my recorded video and even timeshifted video. I've only had this setup for a few days, so after some more usage I'll report back if that's what really fixed the issue for me.

    Hallo,

I had the same problem with MP 0.2.2.0. For that reason, I switched back to 0.2.1.0,
    which works much better.

gxtracker, how do you manage to uninstall the MPA/MPV Codecs.

I would like to try it.

    THX,
    Frank
