So you can still view tv with media portal, just no streaming capabilities?

With the inbuilt TVEngine yes you can watch\record if it supports your TV card, but there is no official support for this, as everything goes into improving TVServer, which is the way forward.

Okay, so does TVServer provide the same type of media viewing capabilities as MediaPortal? Like viewing avi files, music etc. or is it just for tv?

    Hi sddt

TV Server can be used in place of the built in TV Engine in MediaPortal. As you still use MediaPortal as the front end all the other functions in MediaPortal stay the same (videos, music etc).

It can be installed either to provide TV to multiple MediaPortal (or other) clients, or to act as the TV engine on a single PC with MediaPortal also installed on it (single seat role).

Because of these two roles, if you use TV Server there is a separate configuration program for the TV functions. The bulk of the TV configuration is removed from MediaPortal when the client plugin is installed leaving just those parts that control viewing (codecs, zoom modes, teletext etc).

If you want HD TV then you will need TV Server. Also any new developments (such as the Freesat and Sky EPG grabbers) are being developed for TV Server. It is unlikely that there will be any further development of the TV Engine built into MediaPortal and it may be dropped altogether for MediaPortal 2 (although MediaPortal 2 is still quite a way off).

If you are using the new versions of MediaPortal such as RC3 then the install wizard will install TV Server, MediaPortal and the client plugin depending on the options you select. There is quite a bit of configuration in TV Server (which is mostly documented in the Wiki) but this is the price you pay to cover as many combinations of hardware and broadcast standards that you can.

So, you're power cycling the TV, but not putting the PC to sleep ? In General => Startup/Resume settings, try checking "Ignore Windows resolution/size changes" In Codecs and Render, try selecting the specific audio device rather than "Default DirectSound device" Just ideas, no guarantee this will do anything. If this doesn't work, I...

Thank you for pointing out that my analysis may be less than accurate. :p Although the change to TV channel 71 may not also have been applied to the independent radio channels (different MUXes), the logs that I prepared for one of the development team does show a difference between channel 704 ("BBC Radio 4") and channel 731...

On the assumption you are using an OTA/Cable or Sat tuner then no internet connection is required for live TV recordings. BUT only if you already have Media Portal fully installed and functional. For all practical purposes you will need an internet connection to get Media Portal properly installed on a PC! Yes.
