Re: CouchPotato - an iPhone remote app for MediaPortal | Version 1.1 (2011-07-19)
I love the app (I have to looking at all the free time I put into it ) and seeing others use and like it makes me really happy. I am totally overwhelmed by the nice reviews the app is getting and am more than happy to hear what you think how it can be improved.
Of course I have my own opinion how things should work and have certain design goals that I want to follow with this. One of the goals is to keep the app as simple as possible from a usability standpoint and this means to find one really good solution instead of many configurable solutions (and it makes this easier to develop and maintain). You are right, the more users the app gets the harder it will be to please everybody … but for this I try to get feedback here before doing critical things. I think that worked quite good
Sorry for the wall of text, as you may have noticed I am a little passionate about this, :sorry:.
Regarding the channel switch gesture: I proposed two finger swipes left and right because up and down are already taken by the toolbar show/hide gesture ;-) I had another idea of maybe showing some sort of circular menu with more buttons on long tap, but that would negate the whole "you don't have to look at the device" principle.
So unless there is a better suggestion I think I will go with these modified/new gestures:
- one finger, one tap: ok
- one finger, two taps: back
- two fingers, one tap: play/pause
- two fingers, two taps: stop
- two fingers, left/right swipe: channel up, channel down
It's a bit sad because I think the dynamic one finger tap for ok and play/pause was somewhat clever, but giving that a separate gesture will solve other problems, like stopping music, too.
