Sky are rolling out a new box to card pairing system (have for a while now), if you update your card via the box then it will be effected sooner or later

From what I understand if it updates via a card reader then you should be ok

Although djblu hasn't said how it happened :)

No one is exempt. They are sending EMM's to update all cards. Mine was in CCc** and it got stung. If you have an old Thomson box then you will be asked to upgrade to another HD box as they aren't compatible with the new pairing method. 1st November is a date that has been banded about as when they will move to the new method for everyone.

Was inevitable I guess, £80 a month back in my pocket when it happens :)

A new card release will come soon as well imo, depending on working around this pairing update

Are there any issues with the 1.5 release with regards to multiple TV cards that have the same name? I have 2 x TBS 6981 and at the moment I get only a few moments (minutes at the most) of live TV playback before the streams cut off... Before I go investigating a potential network issue, could it be something else as I recall reading about the above issue.

So far keeping card out of your Sky box has prevented the new pairing mechanism getting written to it. However, once they change all the encrypted HD channels to require this new pairing mechanism, those channels will no longer decrypt outside of a Sky box anyway, until someone figures out how to adapt softcams.

Keeping the card out of a Sky box will delay the problem but not solve it.

These dates are nothing but rumours. First the switch was meant to happen in June, then August, then September, then October, and now November. I wouldn't pay any attention to the dates.

I don't understand how your card was zapped outside of the Sky box though, since the whole problem is that only the new Sky box software can handle the new pairing mechanism and softcams can't.

Any softcam can send EMM's to the card, it's up to the card how it handles them. The sky box's aren't reprogramming the cards.
The sky box will receive a firmware update so it can send the ECM's changed using the ekpair and hwkey to the card so they are decoded correctly. Take a look at 'Overcrypt' for viasat on google.

That doesn't make sense to me. You're the first person I know of whose card has stopped decrypting HD channels despite never being put into a Sky box, yet when people put the card back in the box it seems it invariably gets updated. So how does that work if the Sky boxes themselves aren't reprogramming the cards? :/

EDIT: By the way, for anyone with FTV/FSFS cards: Channel 5 HD is no longer FTV and requires EE+ or the old HD Pack to view.

Sky had selected my box for update to the new encryption method, they sent the EMM to modify the card, CCcam sent it to the card and card updated. Now it will only work in box it is linked to.

There are loads of people on forums who have had cards updated outside of the box. You're lucky yours hasn't yet.

I did try and get sky to pair it to an older version number but the card wouldn't have it.

Bugger, so no way around it yet? I'm thankfull that Newscorp sold its 44% stake in Sky NZ then! Although they use NDS Videogaurd 2 there doesn't seem to be a push to change!
