Delays when streaming same channel to multiple clients (1 Viewer)

Hi guys,

We have a machine running just TV Server which has a Hauppauge PVR150MCE card, and we would like to stream one channel to multiple clients around the network (so we can all watch the cricket as we work )

It works fine when the first client connects, however we've found that when the next client connects (say 15 minutes later), then their stream will start where the first one started, i.e its dealyed by 15 minutes.

We've tried using both the S-Video inputs (from a STB) as well as tuning to the analogue terrestrial signal and the same thing happens no matter which input we use. Is this normal behaviour, or is it possible to have multiple clients streaming the same channel of an S-Video input on the server?

It sounds as thought the second client is using timeshifting. Maybe fast forwarding to the end of the buffer by pushing the right arrow key a few times.

Thanks for your reply. We've tried using both the full Media Portal installation with the TV Server plugin, and also the MP TV Client V1.2.5 using VLC player and both behave the same, i.e. they both get the delayed stream and cannot be fast forwarded to the live position.

Is there a way to turn off the timeshifting on the clients if thats whats happening?

I think you will need to post your log files for the TV Server and the MediaPortal. You will get a better response to your questions. Without this info I have no more ideas.

Hi Charli,

I have attached logs from the TV Server machine as well as two of the clients. Client 1 is the first client to connect, client 2 is the second. If a third client connects, same thing, it starts form where client 1 started.

Hopefully this can help you shed some light on the problem. Thanks for your help.

I did some testing with my system and can not reproduce your issue. I wold suggest using a later svn than the one you are using as on that day it looks like there were some issues with the build process. Don't forget to install the svn for MediaPortal and TV Server from the same day.

I know it is a pain, but it will rule out an issue with that svn version you are using. I am using svn 17471 (23/2/08)but there has been some intense work on TV Server in the last couple of weeks, so even grabbing something from early this week or last week would be a good option as well. Don't forget to update all clients.

I completely uninstalled the tv server on the server machine, unistalled sql server, deleted all directories, then reinstalled the latest tv server version (17897), and did the same to the two client machines and brought them up to the same version...but am still getting the same problem, and the client thats running behind is unable to fast forward to catch up.

I've even tried this: use MPTvClient to start timeshifting and launch VLC player one one machine, then on the other machine open up VLC player and open the network stream rtsp://tvserver/stream1.0. This has exaclty the same problem, the second machine starts where the first one did

Very wierd... (btw we've had no problems streaming DVB-S channels simultaneously to multiple clients, could the analogue tuner card be at fault here?)

Hi,
VLC can not jump in stream from tv server, but MP + client should do that when conneting to same stream, dunno about MPTVClient...

did some more testing with my system, What ronilise says about :-
VLC is true. Using it as a standalone, will force it to start from the start of the file and not the live point.
MP TV Client.exe should force it to start at the live point. It does for me in DVB-T just like MP should with the MP TV Client Plugin enabled.

As before, Very strange in your case where DVB-S is working but your analogue is not. The only extra thing I can add here is maybe your buffer file sizes and location??? for each card. Have they been set.

Hopefully someone else is watching this thread and can help. Like you say it maybe a bug.

Yeah Im stumped, might try another card, see if that helps. Anyway we've just discovered the cricket is now available FTA over satellite so we'll use that for now
