I have carried on looking into this and the manual FAQ states that:
"Generally speaking MediaPortal can adress 4 LNBs. But at the moment switching between LNBs is only supported with Skystar2, firedtv/floppydtv and Technotrend TV-Cards."
Is this still the case? I know that some features in the manual have been updated, is this current FAQ entry still true or are other cards supported for LNB switching yet?

I don't think so, because MP has no way of knowing at which timestamp the external player stopped playback.
Best way to achieve this would be to use an auto-resume feature in your external player itself. (MPC-HC can do that, I don't know about VLC)
