You should try different DVD-codecs, not Video-codecs.

I have copied the DVD to the SATAII HDD thats why I'm playing it via MyVideo but it does the same from the DVD 'disk' I have tried ALL codecs in all combinations. SOME back-up DVD work fine no REAL ones do.

I have a fresh XP SP2 install fuly updated with .net I/II +MP10. I have installed NeroVision v6 + WinDVD v6 + MPV/MPA All do the same via MP, All work fine in there own right.

I have a spare NVidia5700 AGP but my m/boad is so dogs bollox it only has PCI & PCI-Express X16.

I had similar problems. Copied some of my DVDs to harddisk but playback resulted in black screen.

I installed PowerDVD and set MP to use this codec (Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder). Works great now.

Thanks Allan, will try that as its the only codec I have'nt tied, didn't want it to get all fat and bloated. In the old days when I used to convert / squish DVD's I found PDVD to be a bit green so put me off trying it this time.

I agree with Callifo, suggest that you borrow a DX9 card, ie fx5200 and see if it makes a difference.
Generally onboard graphics do not cope that well and take system memory.

It's really worth a try, and do not forget to disable the onboard graphics in the bios.

    Good Luck
Sorry, the onboard graphics should be faster than a fx5200. The new intel graphics chipset is supposed to be pretty close in speed to the ATi & NVidia solutions and both of those stomp on my brother's fx5500 which is a 5200 with a faster clock. BTW, onboard graphics have even higher memory bandwidth than PCIe cards so they should actually be able to handle video very well..

It's possible that either the graphics or sound drivers are buggy and you are stuck unless you can find an update.

I agree with you Tech Geek.
When I say this thing is the dog's I meen it, or I would'nt have put it all in a £500+ OrigenAE x15ev2 case. It could be driver related but I just don't understand why EVERY other player plays fine, both windowed and in full screen.
So far I have working out of the box, MP Classic, WMP10, NeroVision, WinDVDv6 and PowerDVD.
And the most anoying thing of all is not one pucker DVD works but some backups do. @ the moment my XBMC is playing things better than MP and I could have bought 15+ XBOX's for the cost of this thing
The bug must be between my m/board / chipset / graphics driver and MP.

it's a really long shot, but can i suggest installing anydvd? that would at least rule out the possibility of some crappy copy-protection thing mucking things up.

No, I think he said it does it with burned dvd's too. Btw, that image looks like what I used to get if I had my old stand alone player switched to PAL instead of NTSC... or if I try a custom resolution that my tv won't support.

Those are 'screen grabs' not photo's, it displays the same on the case's in-built 1024x768 screen as well as on the 32" TV, therefore both VGA and composit display the same.
