I'm not ignoring what te3hpurp said, just wondering whether he's in the minority and thus should have to put up with turning subtitles on every time, rather than everyone else having to put up with turning them off the majority of the time. I'd suggest a poll, but that might not be very fair as many users might not see it.

Not showing subtitles by default would be a major pain for those of us living in countries where English isn't the native tongue and programs (thankfully) aren't dubbed... Implementing it as tourettes suggested would probably be the best way to make everybody happy.

SideNote: Hmm. I don't Really know if I'm in minority or not, But maybe
Daedo can dig some statistic, of users / country. :D

It wont help if the shift the problem to some other people than for now - it would be regression for them (me included, so I'm quite sure such change wont happen).

The right way to sort out the issue is to add the three states for the DVB subtitle setting, like proposed in few posts back.

That's fair enough. If a lot of users need subtitles all the time, I wouldn't expect it to be changed, particularly if it would annoy you tourettes ;)

I was only suggesting that IF there were only a few such users, it would be fairer to change the behaviour to suit the majority of users. Guess I'll have to wait for 1.3, although I can't imagine that's going to be any time soon. I think I'll just have to disable subtitles for my brother's HTPC and tell him that feature doesn't work properly at the moment. I think I'll disable them on my HTPC as well for now, 'cos the benefit of having them on the rare occassions when I want them, isn't worth the hassle of always having to turn them off the rest of the time.

I assume the subtitles are handled internally in MP, but I was wondering if there was any way to use ffdshow to display them instead. I don't know if ffdshow has a setting which would allow some users to set subtitles to default on, and others to set them to default off and switch them on manually with a keyboard command (which I assume could be passed from MP, by assigning the key to a button on the remote), so this might be a stupid idea (quite probable!), but I thought it was worth throwing out there just in case it makes any sense

I think I may have found a workaround to stop subtitles being shown by default when enabled in MP configuration....

If you select a 'preferred language' that isn't transmitted (e.g. Afrikaans in the UK), the 'auto' mode can't match the language so nothing is shown on screen, but the available subtitle streams are shown on the subtitle menu so you can select one for display when you want to :)

Way to go Owlsroost. This little trick works great and means I get to switch subtitles on when I want them :D

Another workaround I have been using with UK users in mind is that there is now an erroneous CC1 selection available.

If you select this CC1 (which we don't have ) then the subs will not come back unless selected.

Darn, this little workaround seems to have been "broken" by 1.2.1 and the subtitles come on every time I start TV again :(

I tried changing it from Afrikaans to Albanian but it didn't help.

Thanks. It works great :) Subs stay on if I change channel and switch off if I stop TV, which seems ideal to me.

I got a bit confused by the instructions and was looking for an old cccp.ax to backup and replace, but that's probably just me being stupid!
