DVD navigation doesn't work (1 Viewer)

With a fresh SVN and MPV & MPA, DVD menu's are still a pain for me. I don't see why this blatant flaw is not already in the bug tracl list??

For example with me, on one DVD the menu selection is not highlighted, on another if I happen to strike the up key, MP hangs (Ctrl+Alt+Sup and kill application required).

Couldn't any expert (where are they? I only see poor lost users lost around... in the support topic I browse...) explain what the option 'turn off DvVA supposed to cure' int the DVD navigation?

Please help!

BTW, I don't have these pure video codecs etc to play with how do you get them?
I have so many questions with so-called codecs too: so many as muxers seem irrevelant as codecs (try them and it does not work as you can imagine) in the list and nowhere in the documentation as it seems, it is explained how this list is populated (try for once to get to know your present codec list on a PC: as many answers as utilities you launch... have a look at my list below...) and why pick such or such, install new ones, etc... I think this is a subject to post...

Sorry if I get a little bit nervous but this is now ten days I spend endless hours configuring around MP in my new Media Center(*) and more and more one section lacks next to 'Why use MP?' and this one is 'Why not use MP (now)!'

(*) I purchased it for the end of the year. I knew it would not be easy cake. But now it just turns into a nightmare... I thought if would convince my wife and kids a Media Center is real high-tech fun. They only see a desperate houseman stuck on this unstable and error stuffed set I hereunder detail:

Here's some suggestions for you to try:-

Install DVD43 (Google for it) - to remove any copy protection as I found that can cause the symptoms you describe.

Try the option "Turn off DxVA" - it sometimes cures DVD navigation issues.

Try the CyberLink video decoder, which comes with PowerDVD (you can get a trial copy) - that one works best for me.

    HTH ... :)

    Salut ggt-labz,

I dont like the using of k-lite codec pack ... they install tons of codec and risk to mess up the system. I prefere to have everything under control.

Can you try to do a REAL fresh install of 0.2.2 ??? then as Taipan said if you have problem try to Turn off DxVA in the configuration dialog.

Sorry Jack for the klite pack but I will keep on with it for a moment as it is not easy easier to install codecs here and there and keep them under control as there is no central management under Windows for them.
BTW I really don't think the problem is here.
Where it comes to codecs I think even with MP it's a real mess. You don't know what is what: for example why do muxers appear in the list of codecs. Nothnig is really clear in the documentation as well. Perhaps nobody ever did anything to make this clear.
As I undestand it codecs transpose video and audio formats as MPEG 1, 2, 4, DivX, etc. So I don't understand as well why Codecs in MP are not sorted this way. I don't undestand too why most of codecs listed by Windows (MS_MMVID)itself are not in MP lists.
Again, enumeration of codecs (and related stuff as filters, mux, etc) is a real mess for me and MP didn't help in this.
That's also why I felt dry to feel out the Video/Audio MPEG2 codec type in my profile configuration with this forum: where do you pick that one? In a section of MP setup? Which one: DVD, Movie, TV?
And finally I got even confused with picking one codec in the Movie section as there are numerous coding schemes with AVI's. Is it a one fits all? Strange...

Thank you Taipan for your suggestion. The Cyberlink codec for DVD's does the job for highlighting menus. Anyway I still have the problem with MP hanging (not responding in Windows Task Manager) when I strike the up button on my Hauppauge 43-b remote with one of my DVD's. Oddly enough it works with the up keyboard key! Here is the MP log for records.

    Thank you.

I also was havin DVD Navigation problems (and also problems with black screens sometime). After messing around a lot with codecs and other settings I did do a complete new installation on an extra partition (Windows & MP 0.2.2).

DVD replay works now. (unfortunately there are some other problems). I did not install any additional codec excepted what MP brought.

In my old partition I also had installed purevideo ... but I don't know if this makes the problem ... just as information.

    thanks+regards

Just wanted to mention I have the same problem here.
MPV codec, DxVA turned off, but no navigation highlight.
I noticed that the problem is with the highlight. If you can figure out what is supposed to be highlighted by the number of your clicks, then you know where you are in the menu and you can press Enter.

so i had a quick look on the issue, and found out that the directshow graph is wrong in some cases. it seems that some (read: most comercial) decoders output the navigation highlights on a seperate output pin. if you take a snapshot from MP's graph with graphedit while playing a DVD, and manually play it, you can get usable navigation if you connect the subtitle output-pin from the decoder to a second input-pin from the renderer.

as "easy" as this sounds, i haven't yet looked at the necessary changes that would need to be done in MP to support those kind of decoders. but if noone else with better knowledge of the DVD code steps up to have a look at it, i will most certainly give it a try sometime next week(s).

Now this is some info! Thanks for your time to analyze this problem. I hope that you'll have the time to look into this problelm and submit a patch. I'd be happy to test it!

    Some additional info:
In this thread somebody suggested that it could be the type of menu used: animated/not animated. Maybe that was more than a shot in the dark?
