The threads from four years ago are probably just as relevant today. If you could provide links I could say what is relevant and what is not.
Without having read what you're looking at: I don't think MP will be able to receive the stream via firewire. Keep in mind the general rule that MP does not support capture cards. HD-PVR and Colossus are the only exceptions currently. Change is afoot with MP2 Native TV (TVE 3.5). Code is written, but it will take a bit of time before that code is available for testing...
