FTR only, which would work as a TVserver, right? Only to record TV and stream recorded or live TV to clients over the network.

And MP clients in the living and on my development machine connecting to this server.

Or do I not understand the function of FTR correctly?

TVServer is still used, but instead of TVServer client plugin on your MP installation, it uses the FTR plugin (which is modified TVServer client plugin) for showing you TV\epg instead.

So I need to 'move' the TVserver (s/w) to the attick computer as well.

Will the mentioned h/w support my tuner cards, TVserver and FTR? Is there a requirement for the graphics card in this server even if it isn't used to watch TV?

I'm somewhat confused, when using FTR, I need the original MP TVserver, FTR and the FTR MP TVclient. Which TV functions does the original MP TVserver take care of and which functions do FTR and the FTR Tvclient then take care of?

You _can_ use other recorders (this is what FTR calls them) than MediaPortals TV-Server if you want.

See the TV-Server as your TV receiver. It takes care of tuning into channels and feeding the stream to clients or recording it when FTR wants it to. FTR handles all the logic for scheduling recording.

When I install FTR with MP I can no longer select codec for H.264 under Television settings in MediaPortal Configuration. Is it not possible to watch H.264 TV channels when using FTR?

Yes it is, the setting is unfortunately missing from MediaPortal's configuration program. Copy this "dummy" TvPlugin.dll into MediaPortal's "Plugins\Windows" directory to make the configuration setting re-appear again:

Version 1.3.1 will do this during its install.

In short: Yes, it is possible. I am watching H.264 encoded channels without any trouble.

FTR client uses the previous settings of the TV-server client plugin. This means, if you had the TVserver setup to use CoreAVC as H.264 coded, FTR will also use this.
At the moment there is no way to change the codec settings, but hopefully this will get into the next release.
If you change your codec and want this change reflected in FTR, i don't know if you would then have to uninstall FTR client, activate "old" TVserver client, select the right codec, and then reinstall FTR client.
But one of the developers must have an answer to this.

[edit]Dammit, I always seems to be too slow when answering questions in this thread :p

I just found out about FTR and it sounds great. Unfortunately, I cant seem to get it to list any channels. They are there in TVServer allright, just not in the FTR plugin in TVServer or the FTR MMC :( I should mention that I have 2 analog tuners and there is no EPG available for the channels here. Could this be the problem.

Can you find a source of XMLTV data? If so, import that into For The Record.

If not, create the channels manually in the Management Console and make sure they are linked to the TV server channels.

I have created a utility to generate an xml file which I use to update the channels I am getting. I have used it and the channels are visible now :) Thanks.

    Questions/observations/feature request .....:

    1) The thing is that the xml I have generated keeps on changing as the cable company keeps on shifting the channels around. Very very irritating but that is how it is. So I have to keep on importing the file. Is that a problem?

    2) I have added channel logos to the Channel Logos folder, but they dont show up on the guide. Is the matching between channel names and logo file name case sensitive?

    3) I had to restart the TVServer service after enabling/configuring the plugin before I could access the TVServer tuner from the mmc.

    4) In LiveTV, clicking on "Start Live TV" the first time starts VLC with that channel. Clicking on it the 2nd time opens another instance of VLC instead of re-using the first VLC instance.

    5) Can I import my groups from TVServer? They are already set up in TVServer and I dont want to do it again.

    6) Is there a file where all the channel + group settings are stored? Once FTR is set up the way I want, I would like to save these 2 settings specially.

    7) Is there any plan to add live tv through the web interface by using the VLC activex plugin? I think this would be a very useful feature.

    8) How can I install the mmc on another pc (which is not running the FTR service) and have it connect to the FTR service on the remote pc?

I apologize for posting such a long list of question etc. Thanks once again for such an excellent and versatile piece of software :D I must also add that the manual is also very well written.
