Is that CPU fan pushing air down over the CPU or up?
I can see where circulation is a major issue with this box.

If the air is being pushed down, then you might be able to create a "cardboard" cage (for testing) that takes the air and passes to that Large venting area next to the CPU, there-by keeping that hot air from being pushed thru the entire case.

it's pulling air up from the CPU heat-sink fins, pushing it up onto the bottom of the optical drive cage.. there's only about 1 CM clearance.

The vent on the left side is the air inlet, the exhaust fan is on the right side vent, behind the HDD. I think the inlet air just needs a little push.

Perfect Home Theater has been testing a slight design change in the mini-ITX chassis, raising the cover just 1/2 cm and venting all around the top. but I think they should include inlet fans on the chassis.

I can see that a simple "scoop" can be made to funnel the CPU fan air out the back vents over the rear connectors... I've got some plastic sheet stock around.. maybe I will experiment :D

The only problem I see is placement of the sata/power cable for the optical drive.

I have a card-stock mockup of the diverter, fits between the fan and the optical drive cage perfectly, opens up wider behind the drive cage to exhaust out the back. .it's been only 15 min, but the fan controls are at 62.4% and 72.6% ... temps at 52.5C and 50C

letting it run, with live TV.

... no go .... after an hour, fan controls were up to 86% and 100%... the CPU wasn't pushing enough through, the chassis fan still carrying the bulk of the load ... could feel hot air from side of case and very little air from the rear exhaust.. will have to wait till mid week to test the second fan set-up (4 day vacation)

beginning new test...Cover on. I have the two chassis fans installed to exhaust, CPU fan is blowing down into heatsink (can't flip)

    Start: 12:45 pm
    MP running, no media playing.
Fan speed control set to 100% for chassis and CPU fans. Fans faintly audible from 2 meters
    Start temps: 55.0C and 41.0C
    HDD temp: 34.0C
    Start CPU load: 2.3%

Picked up 2 NoiseBlocker XM2 40x40x10, then spliced the connectors to one (mobo only supported one chassis fan).. real quiet..I think all I'm hearing is the CPU fan. at $7.40 USD ea. from AquaTunning was a better price than Amazon ($11.00), the shipping from Germany was $19.00 USD (UPS Express)

Maybe you could try some undervolting. Reducing the voltage about 0.050mV or 0.100mV shouldn't make the system instable and would help you with high temperature more than a powerfull cooler.
