How fast is your channel switching? (2 Viewers)

I'm using PowerDVD7 video codec, ffdshow audio codec, 2 x Leadtek DTV1000S cards - channel change time is around a couple of seconds (ie. variously 2,3 sometimes 4,5 depending on ...... who knows what?). It's normally around 4 or 5 seconds when turning TV on for the first time.

Cheers,
Craig

I think that if you change to a channel which is on the same transponder that you have allready tuned, then its faster.
it is slower if you tune a channel on a other transponder/frequence. but that should be ms not seconds.....

fyi we plan to optimize several areas of the code to speed up channeltuning. but that will not happen for 1.0 because these changes have a high risk of introducing more issues.
we have that on our roadmap for 1.0.1 release.

He's using DVB-C, don't think mdapi filter supports dvb-c though I may be mistaken. vlukinius would have to confirm.

To be honest I have no clue about MDAPI filter. I have been using, the MPV and ffdshow and they both are slow. How ever I have to admit I do not know what I used during the test with the logs files I attached. But I think it was MPV.[/QUOTE]

If you are using CAM it could be also that what causes some undecoded packets to reach the TsReader.

    Hi inifinityloop,

I'll tell you what - if I could find any media system that changed channels within milliseconds, I'd be amazed and astounded! It could well be that a different model card, faster CPU/hard-drives could get my channel change times down a bit quicker, but to be honest, I've never had a set-top box PVR before that changed channels much under a couple of seconds, so for me MediaPortal is on a par with those.

Pretty much every channel change that I do would be to a different transponder (limited multi-channel broadcasting in Australia at this point in time), so I'm aware that obviously each channel change involves tuning the card to the new transponder & frequency, re-starting (?) the timeshift buffer, etc.

Anyhow, no complaints from me on the channel change within MP - and more importantly, no complaints from the wife! :D

    Cheers,
    Craig

Channels on same transponder definitely tune much faster than on different transponders on my setup. Good to hear there may be some optimizations for channel changing.

As I'm using Dvb-t no issues for transponders, but same slownes even for channels on same frequencies.
I have Powerdvd & FFdshow codecs installed.
Will see if I can tweak that, but still have the impression it was faster in older MP releases as I did not complain before :;)

    Hi

channel change time now is around: 4sec

After a storm I must rejust my satellite reception. The change time goes down to 1 sec, without change anything within MP or Windows. But only for a few days.

I think the signal streng and quality will influence the change time.
    @infinityloop: Is this possible?

my actual levels with change time around 4sek (TV.log)
    Channel: ZDFdokukanal
    2008-08-22 20:25:30.715894 [Record]: ***** SIGNAL LEVEL: 45, SIGNAL QUALITY: 68 *****
    Channel: Kabel eins
    2008-08-22 21:10:39.553894 [Record]: ***** SIGNAL LEVEL: 66, SIGNAL QUALITY: 92 *****
