I understand that codecs may have a big impact. Is there any good information about this anywhere? Preferably related to media portal.
Even if people have different TV cards and video cards the results for the lag between when the tv card has tuned into the new channel and when the picture actually shows up should be about the same. If it is not a codec that uses gfx cpu or some computer in incredibly slow.

Thanks for any and all help. This is a big issue for many of us I think, even if the issue might not be Media Portal.

    vlukinius,

Try installing the latest directx which can be found here: Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime

I haven't had a chance to fully test since the wife is watching something but it seems to have had a positive impact in my limited testing.

It did have a very positive impact for me two.
I did a quick check in the log files and found that I am down well under 4 seconds between most channels.
I still have about the same errors in the log files. I have not done any extensive checks of the logs yet.

Yeah, it's definitely helped quite a bit for me. I'd have the video lag about 30-40% of the time, now I get a video lag quite rarely.

    i-loop,tourettes.

I suggest the latest DirectX9 runtimes be added to the Requirements page.

    I would agree to that.

But since I am still getting some errors in the log I presume performance could be boosted even more. Maybe not by much but still some. When reading the timeshift file media portal should know what to read and how to read it, there should be no errors. At least that is how I see it. First time you switch it should remember everything and there should be no further errors, assuming it is errors while trying to sort out formats.

Around 3secs between DVB-T h.264 HD channels using cyberlink codec. (Maybe marginally more between transponders). Seems pretty reasonable to me, of course you already know what's on thanks to the EPG so the time it takes to change is not so important I guess.

I do have a client/server installation with the server running VISTA 64 and two Hauppauge DVB-S2 cards installed. I've noticed that after installed the second card channel switching takes longer now. Also the initial start takes up to 15 seconds while switching the channels vary between 2 - 5 seconds depending on transponder switching or not. Client is also VISTA64 with ffdshow.

Does this also have something to do with channel mappings in the server setup ? Where should the newest DirectX be installed, Server or Client ?

    Thanks

Installed latest Direct X update, no difference. What made a slight difference, was changing the audio codec from AC3filter to MPA decoder. Got some heavy jerking after channel switching, so switching time felt even longer. MPA seems to initiate quicker and smoother. So I support the opinion that the combination of codecs is very important for switching times too! (3-5 seconds now)
