I don't know if it's my tired old eyes or my tired old TV, but I cannot differentiate between the watched/unwatched episodes in list view. I could not find a way in the GUI settings, so I guess I would need to edit one of the skin files.

Could someone point me to the one that controls this? It would be much appreciated.

It's your eyes I can differentiate them fine, there is also an icon on the right that shows if episode is watched of unwatched.

However: I (and a lot of other people) woiuld prefer it if they reversed the blue/white colours

+1. Feels a bit unnatural the way it is now.

If you want to change you need to manually edit the xml files and change the colour codes.

+1 for colour swap or at least a more faded "watched" colour

Yes, I'm aware of that, I just need to know which xml file. I have looked thru many of them and haven't found which control is for the watched/unwatched colors.

Definitely +1 for colour swap. Would also prefer a slightly more contrasting difference as the op.
