CTRL+ALT+DEL -> task manager -> file -> new task: type "explorer.exe" (you may kill it afterward) or even better: log into an alternative user account, it may be wise to dedicate all your administrative tasks to a specific Windows account.

The task manager shortcut is ctrl-alt-esc. I believe this works even when explorer is not running (or has crashed).

is this aimed at me? sorry not made myself clear
the problem is mp takes control of screen but throws an obscured error mesg about not rendering i can see a bit of this for a few seconds but mp still has control of screen and simply outputs a blank black screen, i can close mp but that kills the error message anyway so still won't be able to read it..

No sorry, I quoted reagan+carter hoping to be clear that I was just offering a different shortcut to bring up the task manager. I come from the Vista and S3 suspend camp, and as such I see the boot screen maybe once every three or four months... So it's been a non-issue for me. I just thought it was an interesting process in this thread.

I would guess if it is MP throwing the error, that turning up the logging to debug might help you identify what it's doing. (there is a debug shortcut created on install that might give you a clue how to do this). If it's a windows error, the event log may have the clue you are looking for.

ok got it now, instaed of doing the shelling manually i used autosheller from gamerx, i think it had something to do with disabling the sound scheme which i had previously done but for some reason had reset and was active again, now to solve the logon request....
