I think you answered you owner question - it's been almost a year, because it IS huge. 
Remember, these poor devs are splitting themselves two ways. One, they're getting 1.0 ready for a nice, stable release, and two, preparing MP as a long-term platform.
They removed the MP2 forum because it was confusing a LOT of the new users who didn't realize MP1 was end-user oriented, and MP2 was just a technical preview NOT meant for general consumption. And therefore frusting to users and devs.

MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback.
If you you don't have multichannel music you can choose WASAPI as the output and set the number of speakers to stereo.
