So. MePo aside, what have we come up with? I think, given that everything had been done before, we should not worry about an animal or thing being used by someone else (except perhaps an apple) and put our own spin on it. I still like the chameleon as an idea.

IMO the chameleon is a bit too tied to Suse. When I think of this animal as a mascot, it immediately pops up in my mind: SUSE Linux. Maybe I'm the only one.

the octopus could be a good idea instead.

We can also extend the range of potential mascots to mythological/fantasy creatures and related lores.
I just had the idea, and I believe it has NEVER been used elsewhere, what about a mermaid? Besides I see no connection between such a creature and MP :/

Actually in the USA I tend to think of this small reptile as a gecko (like a chameleon) and there is a car insurance company with that as a mascot, here is its image:

I like an the octopus idea. Remote in one hand, dvd in another. Maybe an Ipod (or similar) for music...

There are people that actually look at specs before they buy something.



On the other hand, adding an iPOD will be an instantly recognizable thing that the octopus holds some kind of portable music (if a set of attached headphones didn't give it away enough).

I think there is no problem using an animal already registered by a non-software company. BTW even some lawyers specialized in IP (at least the ones from geiko AFAICS) see no harmful similitude between the geiko and the novell brand logo.

It would be great to have more than one proposal for a mascot, just to have the 'illusion' of a choice

PS I tried to draw a few rough sketches but I'm really not good at it! Sorry no help from me...
