You need to look at the instructions, but it is the resolution of your PC when there is no monitor plugged in, which is usually defaults to 640x480.
The work around involves powering up your HTPC, pulling out the HDMI cable, then VNC'ing to your HTPC using another PC on the network to remote desktop onto your HTPC and change the resolution that it defaults to, to the same as your normal viewing resolution.
Like I say, you need to read the instructions and it will make more sense.
