UNC tends to generate more network traffic than RTSP (and my experience is that networking problems can easily bring a Windows PC to it's knees....)

Sounds like one of the drivers may be the culprit here, watch out for windows update (if enabled) trying to update any, usually better to get these direct from the manufacturers website.

unc path not working, now that does sound dodgy

I have been using the client now for a few weeks and it still continues to play really well using RTSP. I will be sure not to allow windows to update any of the drivers as I suspect Ray is correct about this being the cause of the problem.
