If I understand the problem right this is happening because of a lost audio device.
there must be an option in mp:"stop playback on..." (something like this, I'm on my smartphone so I can't look it up right now)
also there shouldn't be a crash anymore, scythe and I tested this case...

    That's what I'm trying to confirm. :)

From the log files it looks like playback is stopping when the audio device is lost, and I couldn't see any errors or crashes... so I'm a bit confused about exactly what the problem is and how it is being triggered.

    found it in wiki:
    http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/1_...2_Config_Tool_Changes/Focus_and_Stop_Playback
    there you find:
Stop playback on removal of an audio renderer

Enabled by default. Users may experience playback issues if a TV or receiver is connected by HDMI. The audio renderer is lost if the receiver is turned off, or the computer is put to sleep while playing music. You should enable this option if you want MediaPortal to stop playback when the audio renderer is disconnected.
I hope I'm not wrong with my assumption... If I didn't got the problem right, please excuse my "wrong help" oO

I think you are right, In the logs I can see this:
    [2013-08-04 22:08:06,597] [Log ] [MPMain ] [INFO ] - Main: Audio Renderer Intel(R) Display Audio removed
    [2013-08-04 22:08:06,597] [Log ] [MPMain ] [INFO ] - g_Player.OnStopped()

    Great minds think alike! :D
Yes, this is why I'm asking for new debug-level logs so we can see more detail about exactly what occurred there.
...and yes, missing input from @Scythe42 greatly! :(

I've tried the "Stop Playback upon loss of audio playback" option, either checked or unchecked, it crashes.

    Basically, it looks like this.

    HTPC >> Receiver >> TV.

All connected via HDMI. Using CEC also, so that when the TV switches off, it turns the AMP off. Regardless of whether CEC is on or off, this is still happening.

I might also need to point out, that this works fine if I bypass the AMP and plug directly into the TV, it works fine. Switching the TV ON/OFF doesn't break MP and continues to work properly.

Now, removing the amp fixes it, still isn't a great solution. As I say, it works perfectly on XBMC.

I'll provide more logs later on tonight as I'm at work now, although I have remote access to my HTPC, I probably won't be able to recreate it, if I'm not there.
Thanks for your help so far.

    More logs.
I have around 10+ others if you'd like them.

Fairly sure this has to do with the resizing of MP when AMP/TV is switched back on.
