    MP-TVSeries 4.6 – a community version that works with TheTVDB's current service

    Hi everyone,

Like many of you, I was stuck when TheTVDB switched off the old service MP-TVSeries was built for, so new shows wouldn't match without a .tvdb file in every folder. I've put together a community version that talks to TheTVDB's current (v4) service directly, and I've been running it on my PC and HTPC with a big library for over a week now.

    What it does:
    • Shows are found by name again, with titles and episodes in your language
    • Reads show IDs from .tvdb, tvshow.nfo and series.xml files, and keeps same-named shows apart (e.g. Prime Suspect 1973 and 1991)
    • Trakt community ratings for series, seasons and episodes, without the Trakt plugin
    • Artwork fixes, recovery of episodes left behind by failed imports, and no crash on very long file paths
    • Includes the official team's 4.5.1.756 fixes

    What you need:
    - Your own TheTVDB subscription PIN (TheTVDB requires one for every user, about US$12 a year). No API key needed, one is built in.

    Download and install steps:

The full list of changes and a file naming guide:

Please back up your database before installing. This is not the official release, and installing it is entirely your choice. If you don't like it, simply uninstall it and go back to the original MP-TVSeries you had before.

Coming next: a free option that doesn't need a TheTVDB subscription (using TMDB), with TVmaze as a backup.

A big thank you to Damien Haynes and the MP-TVSeries team for the original plugin and years of work. If you run into problems, post here or open an issue on GitHub and I'll do my best to help.

    Cheers,
    Mark
Quick update: Damien has also just released the official MP-TVSeries 4.5.1.764, which adds name searching through TheTVDB's current service, without needing a subscription. If finding new shows is all you need, that's the simplest option.

Mine needs your own TheTVDB PIN, but also gets show details, episodes, languages and favourites from the current service, and adds Trakt ratings, .nfo/.xml ID files, same-name show handling, and the artwork and import fixes. I'm also working on a free option that won't need a TheTVDB subscription.

Choose whichever suits you best. Thanks again to Damien for keeping the official version going.

    Cheers,
    Mark

Hi Damien, thanks for all your efforts to try and resolve my issue, I appreciate it. I checked for C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\MP-TVSeries\Cache\460247 and it does not exist. As it is only 1 series that is the issue, and I can watch it other ways, it is not worth your time to keep looking for a fix. Thanks again for all your help.

MP-TVSeries 4.7 (community version) – free show information, no TheTVDB subscription needed

    Hi all,

Thanks for the thanks and likes on 4.6. Version 4.7 of my community version of MP-TVSeries is now out.

The big change: you no longer need a TheTVDB subscription. If you don't enter a TheTVDB PIN, show details, episodes, cast and pictures now come free from TMDB (The Movie Database). There's nothing to sign up for and nothing to enter. Just install it and run an import.

If you already have a TheTVDB PIN (for Kodi, Plex, Emby or 4.6), enter it on the Online Data tab and it keeps using TheTVDB, just like 4.6. There's also a Source setting there if you want to choose for yourself.

Your library keeps TheTVDB's show numbers either way, so you can switch between the two without starting again. Shows that TMDB has without a TheTVDB number (lots of documentaries) are matched by name and year. A few shows aren't on TMDB at all. They stay unlinked for now, and I'm planning to add TVmaze as a backup for those.

It also includes everything from 4.6: show IDs read from .tvdb / tvshow.nfo / series.xml files, Trakt community ratings without the Trakt plugin, English titles for foreign shows, and plenty of artwork and import fixes.

I've tested it on my HTPC (MediaPortal 1.39) and on a laptop with a clean install and no PIN.

    Download and full details:

Before installing, close MediaPortal and MP-TVSeries Configuration, and back up your TVSeriesDatabase4.db3.

This is not the official release, and installing it is entirely your choice. If you don't like it, simply uninstall it and go back to the original MP-TVSeries you had before.

A big thank you to Damien Haynes and the MP-TVSeries team for all their work over the years. Show information comes from TheTVDB.com and TMDB. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.

If you find problems, post them here or on the GitHub Issues page, and please include your MP-TVSeries.log.

Installed, and seems to work fine (y)
Just added a new series "Lanterns", everything was found without the *.tvdb file in folder, just one glitch:
Trying to manually choose series fanart in GUI resulted in this error dialog:

Maybe it can be fixed ;)

I wanted to add an experience here that might help others. I use TVSeries a lot and have been following this issue ever since the import function stopped working. I've tried all the different (sometimes complicated) solutions with mixed success.

This last time I went in an deleted everything associated with TVSeries; all the current and backup database files, and cleared the entire contents of the cache folder. When I opened TVSeries Configuration it looked like a clean install; I had to specify the import folders and reset import settings. It took a while because it had to rescan and import all of my series, but it was a perfect import!

I have been using MP for over 20 years and I can't remember how many clean installs I've done. Over all those years there has always been a series or two that could not be resolved, maybe it was an obscure series, or the name had punctuation issues, etc. This is the first and only time I clicked START and never touched or adjusted anything, and had perfect results. FYI, I had the Series.TVDB file in each folder, but file architecture was all over the place, all episodes in the root, some in season folders, some sub sub folders, some even mixed.

A special Thank You to Itfearme for keeping TVSeries alive.

Thanks for testing, and glad Lanterns was found on its own! I’ve found the cause of the fanart chooser error: it was looking for a detail about each picture that only TheTVDB’s old service provided. It’s fixed and will be in the next update. Until then, the fanart picked automatically during the import still works fine. Also just for info did you use it with or without any keys/pins
